National Bank of Montreal Open: a player loses a 16th game in a row

The National Bank Open in Montreal is often the scene of great stories, like that of Leylah Annie Fernandez on Tuesday, but it can also be uncompromising for some players.

This was particularly the case of the 43rd racket in the world, to whom the Quebec tournament did not smile. And yet, the Chinese girl needed it so much.
In the first round on Tuesday, Zhang Shuai suffered a 16th straight loss. She gave everything against the Russian Anna Blinkova, 34th, even winning the first set, but she finally lost 4-6, 6-2 and 6-3 in 1h 18min of play.

Zhang hasn’t won since February, when she reached the second round in Lyon, France.

In her previous competition, she won three matches at the Australian Open. She then fell, unable to get up.

In tears, she gives up

The 34-year-old has retired twice, first at Indian Wells in March and then at Budapest last month.

Zhang had given up, discouraged by a gesture from her opponent, the Hungarian Amarissa Toth, who was in her first WTA event. At 5-5 in the first set, the Chinese had wanted to challenge an official who had judged her shot out of bounds, but Toth had erased the trace of the ball in the clay. Shaken, Zhang had burst into tears before withdrawing.

Although she received several messages of support, the damage was done.

This season, Zhang has sailed between the 22nd and 45th ranks in the WTA.
