nearly 1,000 seals and sea lions found dead in Brazil

Avian flu has killed nearly a thousand seals and sea lions in Brazil.

Avian flu also attacks marine animals. In Brazil, nearly 1,000 seals and sea lions have died, Reuters reported Monday (December 11). Precisely, 942 individuals were victims of bird flu in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. A previous report, at the end of October, reported 500 people found dead.

Animal carcasses must be buried or cremated to avoid contamination, while diseased specimens must be euthanized, according to Brazilian oceanographer Silvina Botta, cited by Reuters.

148 accommodations in the country

The contagion among marine mammals appears to have started in Peru and then spread across the South American continent, affecting wildlife in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and now Brazil.

Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry reported 148 outbreaks of avian flu in the country, mainly along the coast, declaring a health emergency to contain the disease, which it said “is not yet considered endemic in Brazil “.

Brazil therefore maintains its status as a “disease-free” country, because “no commercial production (of poultry, editor’s note) has been affected” so far, according to the government.

In France, the level of risk linked to avian flu in mainland France was raised on December 5 from “moderate” to “high” after the detection of “several outbreaks”.
