Nintendo Switch just got hacked

9 months after its release, the Nintendo Switch has just been hacked. It was during the 34C3 conference that “Naehrwert”, “Pluto” and “derrek” were able to access the software core of the console, using the so-called “glitching setup” technique which consists of varying the electrical fluctuations during the system startup.

By proceeding in this way, certain security checks were disturbed which made it possible to recover the keys to decrypt them. After being able to recover the code, the hackers used a technique developed by Nvidia using graphics processor drivers. The fault now open, the three hackers have published a library on GitHub allowing to run old games or “custom” games on the console.

Of course, this breach could also allow the execution of code allowing the illegal playing of already published titles. On the other hand, it will be necessary to improve the hack since at present the support for audio and GPU acceleration are absent subscribers. Also be aware that to run homebrew, a dedicated launcher will soon be released provided that you stay in firmware 3.0.

We imagine that Nintendo will quickly publish updates to secure its console, but with Pandora’s box now open, the manufacturer risks always being behind hackers.
