NVIDIA stops production of its 4080 and 4070 Ti, their price will increase

The move comes just weeks before the expected announcement of the Super RTX 40-series models, which are expected to replace these two high-end cards. Decryption of this new strategy of the American semiconductor giant.

Super models approaching to replace the RTX 4080 and 4070 Ti

While the market eagerly awaits the official announcement of the Super RTX 40 series models, NVIDIA has reportedly decided to stop production of the GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti. According to several concordant sources, these two graphics cards should be replaced by the ‘4080 Super’ and the ‘4070 Ti Super’. It is important to note that NVIDIA has not yet confirmed this information and should therefore be treated with caution.

A response to AMD and market expectations?

This decision by NVIDIA could be explained by several reasons. First of all, this is undoubtedly a response to the success of AMD’s latest graphics cards, notably the Radeon RX 6800 XT and 6900 XT. By offering more powerful and energy-efficient Super models, NVIDIA intends to maintain its leadership in the high-end graphics card market.

Then, this could also correspond to a desire to offer consumers improved versions of existing cards. The Super models of the 40 series should indeed stand out with increased performance and a slightly higher price.

  • RTX 4070: increased performance / lower TDP
  • RTX 4070 Ti: best overclocking capabilities / GDDR6X memory
  • RTX 4080: increased number of CUDA cores / boosted frequency

Consequences for stocks and prices?

The cessation of production of the RTX 4080 and 4070 Ti could have certain consequences for potential buyers. In particular, it is predictable that stocks of these two graphics cards are rapidly dwindling, causing their prices to rise.. It will therefore be interesting to follow market developments in the coming weeks and in particular the promotional offers that could be offered by resellers to sell off their stock.

Turn to the Super models or wait for the next generation?

Faced with this situation, consumers may be tempted to wait for the official announcement of the Super models before making a decision about their purchase. But it is possible that some will decide to turn to the standard models, believing that the differences in performance between the two versions do not justify the price difference. It will probably be several months before these new graphics cards are available in large quantities.

Another option would be to wait a few more years and wait for the release of the next generation of graphics cards, which we already know will integrate major technological advances, such as hardware ray tracing or support for PCIe 5.0.

NVIDIA’s decision to stop production of its GeForce RTX 4080 and 4070 Ti requires consumers and the market to adapt their strategy to this new situation. Between waiting for the Super models, purchasing standard models or being patient for the next generation of GPUs, it’s difficult to determine which will be the best option for each.
