The date was not chosen at random. Saturday December 9, 2023, day of 118ᵉ birthday of the law of 1905 and the national day of secularism, Carole Delga announced her intention to create “a Regional Secularism Council and republican values.

A regional secularism council created in 2024

The president (PS) of Occitanie region specifies that the creation of this new entity will take place in 2024.

“While secularism is regularly called into question or the subject of controversy, the Occitanie Region reaffirms its commitment to ensuring respect, at its level, the principles of the Republic. Firstly that of secularism, insufficiently understood and sometimes poorly applied, up to the highest summit of the State,” indicates Carole Delga.

“Secularism protects freedom of conscience”

“Secularism protects freedom of conscience and its universalism is a powerful source of civil harmony», continues the elected official who believes that “its understanding by the greatest number of people, particularly the youngest, remains today an imperative to face the tensions which cross our society”.

“This is why in 2024 we will create a Regional Council for Secularism and Republican Values, in close consultation with institutions, unions and associations, whose mission will be to support all those who bring this principle to life, teachers, educators, public service agents. in the lead, everywhere in Occitania »

The composition and missions of this Council “will be worked on and detailed at the beginning of next year, with a view to installation during the year 2024 »this is even more clarified.

An announcement that comes in the midst of controversy

The announcement of the creation of this new structure comes in the middle of a controversy. Thursday, December 8, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron participated in a ceremony marking the start of Hanouka, the Jewish festival of lights… at the Élysée village hall. Emmanuel Macron thus triggered an explosion of criticism accusing him of violating secularism.

“The Élysée is not a place of worship”, Carole Delga immediately (and strongly) reacted. “Two days before the anniversary of the 1905 law, it is a bad signal sent by the State to the Republic. We do not compromise with secularism. This common point is precious but fragile,” she added.
