As COP 28 ends in three days, the Secretary General of OPEC called on its members not to accept agreements that go against fossil fuels. A position that shocked many participating countries.

Big cold snap at COP 28. A letter at the heart of all conversations. It was written by the secretary general of OPEC, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It urgently calls on its members to proactively reject any agreement targeting fossil fuels.

From the podium, the representative of the United Arab Emirates also defends oil, gas and coal: “We must continue to use all energies. Otherwise, the world will not be able to meet demand. ». This position arouses the fury of around a hundred countries, including those of the European Union. For them, this COP 28 must send the signal of the beginning of the end of fossil fuels.

The Sultan also focuses on renewable energies

But the economies of oil-exporting countries mainly depend on this fossil energy. Hence the letter which ignites this COP 28. The OPEC countries are nevertheless trying to diversify their economies. In the United Arab Emirates, for example, Sultan al-Jaber is the boss of the country’s first oil company, but he is also the head of the largest renewable energy company.
