Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon breaks world record for most expensive watch sold at online auction

Patek Philippe has done it again. One of its most complicated timepieces has broken a new record, as the most expensive piece ever sold at an online auction at an auction organized by Christie’s.

It is therefore on the web that the Sky Moon Tourbillon (reference 6002G-001) from the Geneva house, grande dame of watch auctions and records, changed hands for 45.4 million Hong Kong dollars, or around 5 .4 million euros. The Top 10 most expensive watches sold at auction are almost exclusively made up of watches from the brand, with the exception of two Rolexes. Topping the list is the 6300A-010 Grandmaster Chime, which was sold at auction in 2019 for €28.78 million. The one that found a buyer on March 22 was unveiled 22 years ago: the Sky Moon Tourbillon is a white gold watch 44 mm in diameter and 17.35 mm thick. It amazed the whole world because it was the second most complicated wristwatch (after the Grandmaster Chime) from Patek Philippe. And because it cost around a million euros. Its double face is a living example of the importance that the brand attaches to both the tradition of fine mechanical watchmaking and the artisanal know-how applied to it.

Very baroque, it has 12 complications (including a perpetual calendar with retrograde date, a minute repeater and a tourbillon) and 705 components. It is decorated with hand-engraved scrolls and arabesques and a cloisonné and champlevé enameled dial.

On one of its faces, the clock has engraved hands which indicate the hour, the minute and the day of the month, an indicator for leap years, another for the month and another for the day (Monday, Tuesday, etc.). .), as well as the lunar phases. Its striking reverse presents a celestial map with sidereal time in 24-hour mode, which, instead of taking the sun as a reference, as in solar time, takes into account a distant star, and allows us to observe the celestial bodies that us surround in the universe. It also shows the rotation of the celestial vault with the phase and angular movement of the moon (this time linked to sidereal time).

It is true that the sidereal time display is a rarity in watchmaking and that we do not know its practical use, but no one doubts its beauty and the fact that it represents a technical challenge for any watchmaking company.
