PCIe 7.0 goes to version 0.3: 512 GB/s in 2025

An interface whose final version is scheduled for 2025; the first products are expected in 2027. For the moment, our desktop and laptop computers do not seem to be affected…

PCIe 6.0 was finalized last year; since, the PCI-SIG (Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group), the industrial consortium responsible for standardization, is working on PCIe 7.0, scheduled for 2025. It has published version 0.3 of the specification.

As we explained in a previous update dedicated to PCIe 6.0, there are several steps before arriving at the final version, 1.0. Version 0.3, which remains a very preliminary stage, marks an agreement between all the members when it comes to the main characteristics. It will allow market players to test them and then send their feedback for version 0.5.

Graphics cards still in PCIe 4.0 in 2023

As always, PCIe 7.0 must double the speeds in order to reach 128 GT/s and up to 512 GB/s in bidirectional via an x16 configuration. This extension bus standard will use PAM4 signaling (4-level pulse amplitude modulation), 1b/1b flit mode coding and forward error correction (FEC); it aims to improve energy efficiency, reliability, etc. Naturally, it will maintain backwards compatibility with all previous generations.

According to PCI-SIG members, as highlighted in the presentation image, PCIe 7.0 targets bandwidth-intensive applications in the AI, HPC, aerospace and military sectors; the organization does not mention our fixed and portable PCs. PCIe 7.0 will eventually invade our machines one day, but perhaps not as soon as 2027. PCIe 5.0 devices for the general public, SSDs, remain a niche market. On the GPU side, the GeForce RTX 4090 and Radeon RX 7900 XTX still use the PCIe 4.0 interface. Finally, PCIe 6.0 compatible products are still under development.
