Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov handed in his resignation to the Rada on September 4 after President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his replacement the day before following corruption scandals.
“I submitted my resignation letter to Ruslan Stefantchouk, President of the Ukrainian Parliament”, declared this September 4 on the social network X (ex-Twitter) Oleksiï Reznikov, 57, in office since November 2021.
Ukraine’s defense minister had become one of the faces of the conflict, frequently traveling abroad to negotiate new aid from kyiv’s Western allies. But a corruption scandal concerning an army supply contract, signed with a Turkish company, puts him directly in question. His departure is therefore well received by the Ukrainians.
Expected behind the scenes in recent days, this decision comes in the midst of a Ukrainian counter-offensive and while President Zelensky has promised to strengthen the fight against corruption. Endemic to Ukraine, it threatens its status as a candidate country for the European Union.
