The day after his announcement, it was on the Franceinfo morning show that the Minister of National Education announced the experimentation with school uniforms. A full-scale test which should be carried out in schools, colleges and high schools, where the municipalities would volunteer. At the microphone of Franceinfo on December 7, Gabriel Attal explained that “itLike many French people, I am divided on the question of uniform. (…) I am not yet convinced that this is a solution that would solve everything, and also not convinced, like some, that we should not talk about it and try it“. He said to himself “ interested to see what results a large-scale experiment would give in terms of school climate, in terms of raising the level of our students“.
The experiment should begin in September 2024, at the start of the next school year, but the most motivated communities will launch the first uniforms next spring. Partly financed by the State, the measure will concern a limited number of testers. The cities of Reims, Tourcoing and Nice have spoken out in favor of this experiment. The Bouches-du-Rhône Department is also committed to this for its middle school students. The measure was voted on during the last departmental council.
The basic kit, for each student, may consist, according to the latest information, of five polo shirts, two sweaters and two pants. But some communities imagine using only part of the whole: only the polo shirt and the sweater for example. They will be the ones to place their orders.
An outfit which should cost around 200 euros but families will not have to pay anything. According to franceinfo, the preferred route would be state-local funding (town hall, department, region). Every child should be entitled to a new change of clothing every year, if the model becomes too short or damaged, for example.
However, several questions remain to be resolved: will girls and boys, for example, have exactly the same model? Will there be skirts or Bermuda shorts for summer? Does the trousseau contain a sports outfit? We were also talking about a blouse, or an apron, for the little ones, in kindergarten, but will the full outfit be obligatory from a very young age, at school, or just the top?
Before launching, each establishment must validate the project by the board of directors or school council to include the measure in the internal regulations. The experiment will benefit from scientific monitoring, an evaluation of the school climate, the results and the atmosphere in class, promises Gabriel Attal.
