Spike Chunsoft revealed new details about Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, including new features and characters. The new roguelike RPG will launch first in Japan before arriving in the West.

Announced in the Japanese Nintendo Direct on September 14, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is a brand new entry in Spike Chunsoft’s long-running dungeon RPG series. The game will first launch on January 25, 2024 for Nintendo Switch in Japan with Japanese and Traditional Chinese language options. The latest details provide a detailed look at what players around the world can expect this coming February.

Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island Features

Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island includes many features including Sumo Status. During this state, Shiren gains several benefits such as increased attack power, increased maximum HP, and the ability to cancel traps. Shiren activates Sumo status when its fullness exceeds 150, but the status will no longer be active once it drops back to 120 and below. Players can directly control when Shiren activates Sumo status since Fullness can be changed or increased by eating Onigiri and certain items. However, Shiren cannot use items to move.

Mysterious doors can be found, leading Shiren to another realm filled with monsters known as Behemoths. These Behemoth doors can open inside the dungeon, so players should be careful as the monsters are much more powerful than normal enemies. Although Behemoths have a slow movement speed, they have high attack power and are immune to attacks from the front or side thanks to a defensive barrier.

Sacred Objects and Monster Dojo

Another of the new features found in Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island are sacred objects. A Holy Item is a rare piece of equipment with random enhanced abilities. These items are available in blue and gold rarities. Golden items are rarer, but their effect varies each time. As a result, blue items can be more powerful and reliable. Additionally, holy weapons and shields can contain rare runes called natural runes. These natural runes have unique effects that cannot be obtained elsewhere.

Outside of exploring, players can train at a special facility known as the Monster Dojo. In the Monster Dojo, players can simulate dungeon encounters and train at their leisure before facing real encounters. Players can also freely place monsters, items and traps that you have already encountered in dungeons.

Characters

Hibiki

The young quartermaster of the Red Orca Pirates. She hates greedy people and follows Red Orca’s motto: take only what is necessary. Hibiki travels to Serpentcoil Island in search of a peculiar lost treasure.

Sokusen

The Pirates’ loyal boatswain Red Orca and Hibiki’s right-hand man. He accompanies and helps Hibiki in her expedition to Serpentcoil Island.

Tugai

The bombastic captain of the Black Shark Pirates. He brought his crew to Serpentcoil Island with the intention of taking every last bit of treasure for himself.

Seki

The leader of a group of ninja living secretly on Serpentcoil Island. Despite her exceptional ninja skills, she is best known for her kindness. She is beloved by her fellow ninja, who affectionately call her their princess.

Lately, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island for Nintendo Switch will be released on February 27, 2024 in North America and Europe. Pre-orders are available now at participating retailers. First-run copies include a 2.75″ x 3″ sticker depicting protagonist Shiren and the game’s traditional Japanese art style.
