Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver a speech Sunday in Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border, as he steps up his anti-immigration rhetoric and campaign for hard-line immigration policy proposals.
The frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination will appear alongside Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who is expected to support Trump at the event. The trip is being billed as an official state visit, and Trump and Abbott are expected to discuss plans to curb illegal immigration.
Trump ramped up his rhetoric on the campaign trail, promising to carry out “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history” if he wins the White House next year. He said undocumented immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” in comments that echo white supremacist rhetoric and compared migrants who come to the United States to the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter.
“There has never been anything like this. Our country is being invaded. It’s an invasion,” Trump, who has made reducing illegal immigration a cornerstone of his 2024 campaign, said at a recent rally in Hialeah, Florida.
Trump plans a widespread expansion of his administration’s tough immigration policies, which would restrict legal and illegal immigration, if he is elected to a second term. Plans include rounding up undocumented immigrants already in the United States and placing them in detention camps while awaiting deportation. Such a proposal would require building large camps to house migrants awaiting deportation and using federal and local law enforcement to assist in the apprehension of undocumented immigrants across the country.
“Ending the invasion of our southern border is an urgent national security necessity and one of President Trump’s top priorities. It is for this reason that he has presented – in his own speeches and in his Agenda 47 program – by far the most detailed program to secure the border, stop illegal immigration and deport those who should never have been allowed to enter our country in the first place. ” a Trump campaign spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.
The former president cited the war between Israel and Hamas to stoke fear and anti-immigration sentiment in the United States and advocate a crackdown on immigration. He advocates “ideological controls” on immigrants, blocking immigrants and refugees from majority-Muslim countries, and deporting people to the United States on visas who he says have “jihadist sympathies.”
