Uncertainty for the future of Mont Pinacle after the death of Daniel Langlois

The sudden death of businessman and patron Daniel Langlois creates uncertainty for the future of the emblematic Mont Pinacle, in Frelighsburg, in Estrie, of which he had purchased a large part of the land to protect it.

“We will wait to see what happens with the succession (of Daniel Langlois). (…) We don’t know, no one knows (what will happen),” says Danielle Dansereau, administrator of the Mont Pinacle Land Trust, in an interview.

The mountain is the last one near Montreal that is not developed and is therefore likely to attract the desire of developers, underlined Mr.Me Dansereau.

Two organizations have been working for years to preserve these places. On the one hand, Land Trust, which protects in perpetuity some 466 hectares around Mount Pinnacle

On the other, the Daniel Langlois Foundation, which carried out activities on land acquired by Daniel Langlois from the mid-1990s.

Protect nature

The Foundation is notably involved in a research project at the summit of Mount Pinnacle which aims to “establish an autonomous system for collecting environmental data”. It is “a unique and fragile natural environment, without road access (comprising) varied and particularly rigorous climatic conditions”, according to the Foundation website.

The research project cataloged and photographed animals such as the turkey vulture, fox and bobcat, fisher and black bear.

For preservation reasons, the public does not currently have access to the summit of the mountain, as Mr. Langlois wished.

MMe Danserseau said he had already expressed his concern to Daniel Langlois about what would happen after his disappearance. Daniel Langlois would have been reassuring, without however providing precise guarantees.

Legal saga

The establishment of Daniel Langlois in the region follows a long battle between citizens and a developer who wanted to commercially develop the mountain and build condos there, according to Ms. Dansereau’s explanations.

The case gave rise to a legal saga that reached the Supreme Court in the 2000s, where opponents of the project ultimately won their case.

MMe Dansereau emphasized that Daniel Langlois had been an ally of the environmental cause in this matter.

“He played an elegant role, in that the developer was so angry at any opposition to his project (…). (The developer) was very happy to be able to sell to someone who was not associated with this opposition,” she explained.

Although city regulations limit the possibility of commercial development at Pinnacle Mountain, its protection is not guaranteed, she said.

“Mr. Langlois had certainly made arrangements for the long-term safeguarding of his Mont Pinacle lands. But I think it is too early to address this subject,” declared Ludovic Carpentier, of the Daniel Langlois Foundation.
