Upper Loire. 5,000 m2 of brush burned in Retournac: residents evacuated

“We heard like a pan, I told my friends that someone had just hit a boar”, says a young man who was with friends not far from the scene near the Water Tower. This witness filmed the smoke which was relatively large. Another resident, whose house is close to the fire, alerted the fire department.

This Tuesday around 6.30 p.m., the firefighters were alerted to a fire starting on the Cottier road in Retournac. Quickly, an important device is deployed. Nearly sixty firefighters were mobilized.

Five houses threatened

According to the elements collected on the spot, the fire would have started from the side of the road before spreading. Five houses on the surrounding hill were threatened by the flames. Residents were evacuated during the emergency response.

In total, 5,000 m 2 of brushwood were engulfed in flames. Around 8:30 p.m., the fire was brought under control.

An open investigation

The police secured the scene. A security post was set up by the firefighters who should have stayed on site for part of the night. Two vehicles from the two forest intervention groups as well as 23 machines and drones were mobilized on site.

Badly extinguished cigarette butt, glass that catches fire under the effect of heat or even a firecracker? All hypotheses are studied. An investigation was opened by the gendarmerie to try to determine the causes of this fire.

Since the beginning of the summer, firefighters have already carried out three major interventions related to fires in the town of Retournac. With the drought, they call for the greatest vigilance.
