This Monday, a depression is circulating from Belgium towards Germany. The disturbance linked to this depression crosses France from west to east on Monday. In contact with cold air, snowfall occurs at low altitude in the Grand Est and Burgundy-Franche-Comté as far as Rhône-Alpes between Monday and Tuesday morning. We expect 10 to 20 cm of snow around 800 meters and a few drops from 500 meters. The situation promises to be delicate in towns, mid-altitude villages and ski resorts in the Vosges, Jura and Alps on Tuesday morning. With the cold air plunging into the Mediterranean, the mistral and the tramontane rise during the night from Monday to Tuesday but it is in Corsica that the westerly wind will blow the most violently with gusts of 100 to 130 km/h on the ends of the island. and the Corsican mountains.
This situation is not exceptional for the end of November, but as it will be the first snowfall at low altitudes this late autumn in eastern France, it will be advisable to be careful. This is why this special press release was distributed by our services.

This Monday at 9 a.m., the disturbance gives light precipitation between Lorraine and Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is rain and plain and light snow above 400 meters above sea level.

Regarding the snow

Monday morning, the first snowfalls occur in the Grand Est, from the Ardennes to Lorraine, from 400 meters above sea level without sticking to the ground due to a slight mildness at altitude. This snow only sticks to the ground in the Vosges and the Jura above 500-600 meters.

Monday afternoon, the disturbance descends very quickly towards the Rhône-Alpes region where it snows from 600 to 700 meters above sea level, sparing large towns and major highways in the plains.

Monday evening, precipitation, in the form of rain below 700 meters and snow above this altitude, concerns the Grand Est, Franche-Comté and Rhône-Alpes.

It’s the night of Monday to Tuesday that the situation will become more delicate. Indeed, the cold polar air will rush into eastern France. It will snow just above Annecy, Chambéry and Grenoble, but also in Franche-Comté, from 400 to 500 meters above sea level above Besançon, towards Pontarlier.

Tuesday morning, Snowfall will continue from the Alps to the Vosges. With isothermal heating, it could even snow in the Alpine valleys.

Tuesday afternoon, Snowfall will gradually ease, occurring in the form of showers, except from Jura to Savoies where it will be more continuous.

Evening and night from Tuesday to WednesdayEven if the weather becomes drier again, you will have to be wary of frost which could make driving conditions difficult with the generalization of ice in the east of France on the secondary road network at medium altitude.

In terms of new snow depth, we generally expect:
– 5 to 10 cm around 600 meters altitude
– 10 to 20 cm approximately 800 meters from the Vosges to the Alps
– 20 to 30 cm around 1000 meters
– 30 to 50 cm on the heights of the Jura and the north of the Alps up to the north of Isère around 1300 meters

Regarding the wind

During the night from Monday to Tuesday, the mistral and the tramontane will rise suddenly. It is between the east of the Var and the interior of the Alpes-Maritimes that the wind will blow the strongest, occasionally reaching 100 km/h, or even 10 to 30% more on the high points of the municipalities of these 2 departments, up to 140 km/h in Caussols. In Corsica, a storm is expected with gusts of 150 km/h near capes and exposed coasts as well as in the mountains where heavy precipitation and heavy snowfall will occur from 1000 meters above sea level.

From mid-afternoon on Tuesday, the winds will weaken. In the evening, the strongest gusts will no longer reach 100 km/h. Even if the wind blows less strongly, the wind will feel icy.
