Seven of the suspects are in pre-trial detention in this case and “the damage currently amounts to around 5 million euros”, indicated the public prosecutor of Rennes, Philippe Astruc, confirming information from Le Parisien.
The first in this series of arson attacks broke out on the night of December 19 to 20, 2022 in a Poêles & Cie store in Bain-de-Bretagne, in Ille-et-Vilaine. The following night, in La Mézière, still near Rennes, another store in this chain was destroyed by flames, recalls Le Parisien.
Criminal trail confirmed
In both cases, an accelerating product had been used and the criminal trail was confirmed a few days later: the security guard of a third store in the chain, in Châteaubriant, in Loire-Atlantique, had frightened men lurking nearby in the middle of the night and who had left behind a crowbar and a can of gasoline.
Using the telephone, the police began by tracking down three suspects. They also identified a young woman, a disgruntled and threatening customer, with whom the boss of Poêles & Cie had an altercation shortly before the start of the fires.
This woman’s companion, a young entrepreneur born in 1998, is of particular interest to investigators. The young man, who presented himself last year in Ouest-France as an entrepreneur who is “afraid of nothing”, not hesitating to lie to achieve his ends, would have had numerous contacts shortly before the fires with one of the suspects.
Other acts of vandalism
Both were placed in pre-trial detention but this did not prevent other acts of vandalism and fires from being committed in the new Poêles & Cie stores in the region, the company director’s vehicle having even been destroyed. by the flames.
Other suspects were indicted for these facts, all investigated in Rennes.
Le Parisien indicates that three new individuals were arrested last month, suspected of having set fire to an individual’s car in August 2022 in Guérande, in Loire-Atlantique. The victim’s neighbor was a young couple who were sometimes too noisy with whom she had had an altercation: the young entrepreneur and his partner.
