Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft released 39 games between the three in 2020 … and only 6 new IPs.
GamesIndustry.biz offers an infographic with curious data for the year 2020 in terms of video games, such as the number of new IPs launched by Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
Every year, when these dates arrive, it’s time to look back for a moment and take stock of what 2020 has left us. This year has been challenging in almost every way, but the video game industry has been on the rise. New consoles have come out, games haven’t stopped coming out, and people have flocked to them to escape the worries of the world.
GamesIndustry.biz has made a series of infographics, collecting data from almost a dozen sites and analysts, and they offer us some of the most curious data regarding video games of the year. For example, how many new IPs have there been this year?

Well, according to data from GamesIndustry, among the six major publishers in the industry (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Activision, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft), they have launched 59 games… but only 9 have been new IPs.
Two new IPs in the case of Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and Ubisoft, and one for EA. Nintendo has released 17 games, Sony 12 and Microsoft 10.

Another interesting fact is Google’s most searched games, led by Among Us, Fall Guys, Valorant, Genshin Impact, The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, FIFA 21, Animal Crossing, Call of Duty Warzone … and Dragon Quest Walk.
Also the games that have received the most media coverage: Fortnite 75,117 articles were written, closely followed by Cyberpunk 2077 with 72,491 articles (how many of those will have been this last week, due to the issue of returns?).

Final fantasy 14 was the most talked about game on Twitter, by far, with 924,063 tweets, followed by Animal Crossing, Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, which hovered around 650,000 tweets. Another interesting piece of data is the percentage of people who have one console, but also own and play on another, in the UK.
They have also given sales figures. The top three sellers in the UK were FIFA 21, Animal Crossing New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In the US they were CoD Black Ops Cold War, CoD Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing. And in Japan, Animal Crossing, Ring Fit Adventure and Final Fantasy VII Remake. The highest rated game according to Metacritic was Persona 5 Royal from PS4.

And we end up with more figures. According to Newzoo, the 74% of revenue the market comes not from purchases of games or consoles … but from micropayments within games (a segment in which mobile games have an important weight). The Gaming industry donations for charitable causes in 2020 raised 160 million dollars for campaigns against Covid-19, 43 million for the organizations they support Black Lives Matter, and 5.5 million for the fires of Australia.
