Nintendo will also offer an online service for its upcoming gaming console, the Nintendo Switch. The company had already revealed this during the launch of the console in mid-January. What was not known until now is how expensive this online service will be. Nintendo’s President Tatsumi Kimishima has now given an approximate price for the Japanese market to The Nikkei: The online service for the Nintendo Switch should cost between 2,000 yen and 3,000 yen per year. Converted that would be between 17 euros and 25 euros.

What exactly will be included in Nintendo’s online subscription for the Switch is unclear. However, the company has already revealed that it will offer a monthly classic NES game via the online service, which can then be played free of charge for a month. If you also want to play with other users on your Switch Online and also want to talk to these players, you cannot avoid this online service. It is mandatory in order to be able to use the voice chat app for the smartphone together with the console. Incidentally, there will be no voice chat directly via the console itself. We don’t know yet whether simple online multiplayer gaming is also included in this price or whether it has to be purchased on top of it.

Depending on how you use it, the switch gets quite expensive

The more details about the Nintendo Switch are known, the worse the console looks. Yes, the device differs from other consoles such as the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4, among other things, in that it is a hybrid that can be used with the living room TV but also as a handheld on the go. And yes, online service for the Switch is cheaper than competing online services, which typically cost around $60 a year. But that’s where the advantages end.

At 329 euros, the switch costs a little more than the Xbox One and significantly more than the cheapest variant of the PlayStation 4. There is currently no information about a VR headset for the switch. For the PlayStation 4, on the other hand, you can already buy the virtual reality glasses PlayStation VR. The online service of the switch currently offers less than the online services of the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4. VR glasses for the Xbox One should be available in the summer. Online voice chat cannot be done through the console, it must be done through the smartphone comanion app.

The divisible JoyCon controller is included in the price. But if you want to buy an additional “half” JoyCon controller, it costs 50 euros. If you want two and thus a complete controller, this costs 80 euros. Then there is the connector, thanks to which the two halves of the controller can become one. That costs another 30 euros, but it also has an additional battery. If you then want to buy a normal, non-divisible second controller, it costs another 70 euros. The wireless DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 costs just over 50 euros, as does the Xbox One controller, which is also wireless.

You will also have to buy a memory card for your Switch. Because the console only has 32 GB of internal memory. That might just be enough for two games, depending on how much memory they need. However, 15 GB games are no longer uncommon. For comparison: The “small” PlaySation 4 has 500 GB of memory.
