PlayStation 5 out of stock? Sony hopes for improvements in the second half of 2021.
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has indicated in conversation with Wired that he expects the PlayStation 5 to be more available in the second half of 2021. How seriously we should take that is still a question, because the Japanese company recently announced that it would not be able to meet the demand until 2022.
“We are working as hard as we can to improve the situation,” Ryan said in an interview with Wired. “We are seeing production increase during the summer and certainly in the second half of the year and we hope to see a kind of return to normalcy in that period in terms of the balance between supply and demand.”
The comments follow a similar response from Ryan in February, when he suggested the situation would improve by the month in 2021 – especially in the second half of the year. We recently saw some of this in the Netherlands and Belgium, because the last drop took place at Bol.com last week. At Coolblue, the advice is still to register for a notification, so that you may be informed at an early stage. MediaMarkt expects to be able to offer separate copies again in July due to all open orders. The overview below gives you an idea of when the last drops took place:

- 12 months of PlayStation Plus for € 49.99 at CDKeys.com
- Pre-order at Bol.com → DualSense in Midnight Black and Cosmic Red
- DualSense with Returnal for € 99.99 at Coolblue
- On Wednesday, May 19, there was a drop in the morning at Bol.com.
- It may therefore be the turn of other Dutch parties too soon.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said recently that Sony cannot keep up with demand and that stock problems will continue into 2022. “Even if we have many more PS5 consoles next year, our supply could not keep up with demand,” said Totoki. What’s actually going to happen with the stock and offerings is unknown, of course, but it’s probably fair to say that the conflicting reactions don’t paint the most promising picture for PlayStation fans still on the hunt for a PS5.
Totoki has also stated that Sony is exploring various options to address the global chip shortage, such as finding secondary suppliers or possibly supplying a refreshed PS5, which may be released in 2022.
