The Mega Evolutions of Pokémon Gos allow you to give more power to existing creatures, turning them into something much more powerful.
Introduced in the main series with Pokémon X and Y, Mega Evolutions occurred when using specific stones in battle.
In Pokémon Go, Mega Evolutions consist of a temporary transformation, making use of a new type of item – Mega Energy.
This page explains How to Mega Evolve Pokémon in Pokémon Go, how to get Mega Energy and where you can use Evolved Mega Pokémon.
What Mega Evolutions are currently available in Pokémon Go?
Although some Mega Evolutions have been launched in Pokémon Go, they are not all available at the same time. This means that if you want to complete your Mega Pokédex, you will have to pay attention to the Pokémon that are currently available in Mega Raids. If not, you run the risk of having to wait for them to appear again.
In December, three Mega Evolutions appeared in Mega Raids:
- Mega Blastoise
- Mega Pidgeot
- Mega Ampharos
How Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Go
Mega Evolution is an additional evolution of certain Pokémon, more powerful, available to certain creatures – such as the initial starters of Kanto.
To Mega Evolve a Pokémon in Pokémon Go, you need a feature called Mega Energy. Once a Pokémon has Mega Evolved, it will remain in that form for a limited time (which was increased to eight hours in October 2020) and can be used in a variety of battles.
You will be able to see how long your Mega Evolution remains in that state on your CP screen.
Mega Evolutions arrived with Mega Raid.
Once you have returned to your normal form, the Mega Energy you need for Mega Evolve again later will decrease.
This amount decreased further on Thursday, September 3, as Niantic made a series of adjustments to the Mega Evolution system.
Other information you should know about Mega Evolution:
- You can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon at a time. If Mega evolves a second Pokémon, the first Pokémon will return to its normal state.
- Shadow Pokémon are not fit for Mega Evolution.
- Pokémon clones are not suitable for Mega Evolution.
- Mega Evolutions will be listed on your Pokédex, under the ‘Mega Pokédex’ tab. You have one more thing to complete!
- There will be two new Medals that will be added to the game – one for completing unique Mega Evolutions, and the other for total Mega Evolutions. (Thanks to martycochrane on reddit for revealing this information.)
How to get Mega Energy in Pokémon Go
Mega Energy is specific to each individual Pokémon – similar to the way Candy works in games. So if you want to Mega Evolve a Bulbasaur to Mega Bulbasaur, you will need Bulbasaur Mega Energy.
Mega Energy can be found by completing Mega Raids, a type of Raid that contains Mega Pokémon. The faster you win a Mega Raid, the more Mega Energy you will receive. and this figure was increased in September 2020 thanks to player feedback.
It has also been confirmed as a reward in certain Special Surveys; you can receive Mega Energy for Beedrill, for example, by completing ‘A Mega Discovery’. Since Mega Energy is specific to each type of Pokémon, we suspect that there will be more ways to obtain Mega Energy over time as they enter and exit Raids – although this is speculation on our part.
On September 3, 2020, Niantic announced that it was working on a series of adjustments to improve the way Mega Energy is obtained in Pokémon Go. These new methods of obtaining Mega Energy include:
- Additional ways to obtain Mega Energy from research tasks
- Walk with your buddy
Niantic also announced that it was working on an adjustment that would allow you to get Candy bonuses when you capture a Pokémon that has the same type as your Mega Evolution Pokémon.
Where can you use Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Go?
While a Pokémon is in its Mega Evolved form, you can use it in the following areas of the game:
- Raid Battles
- All other Pokémon in the Raid will receive an attack boost. Another boost is given if these Pokémon share the same type of attack. (These boosts cannot be combined, so you can only enjoy one Mega Evolution at a time.)
- Battles in Gymnasiums
- Battles against Team Go Rocket
- Battles against Friends
- Used as Buddy
On the other hand, Mega Evolutions cannot:
- Defend Gyms
- To be used in the Go Battle League (although Niantic has inferred that this could change in the future, perhaps for a specific League or competition.)
