Red Dead Redemption 2: The map and online map in detail.
Already in terms of area, the Map of Red Dead Redemption 2 overshadows everything developer Rockstar has ever poured into bits and bytes. Against the background of the scenario of Red Dead Online are the dimensions of the map However, even more impressive, because: At the end of the 19th century, automated means of transport were severely limited. Where in GTA you can quickly cover huge distances thanks to modern amenities such as sports cars, airplanes and more, only your faithful horse is available to you in RDR2.
But also in another, hardly to be underestimated, the map of Red Dead Redemption 2 Online shines. While many other games also throw you into a huge game world dominated by a yawning void, the environment in Rockstar’s Adventure is extremely detailed and full of life. Grass hares sway gently in the wind, wild animals defend their territory and the passing clouds draw everything in the sky that your imagination can recognize in it. When it comes to versatility, there is also a lot of cinema here. There are many different biomes; the choice ranges from picturesque, snow-capped mountains, misty swamps to lively cities.
Without a doubt you will take a short break here in many corners and ends and pay tribute to the impressive landscape and the hustle and bustle of its inhabitants. This page is intended to give you a brief overview of the map and its limits. We’ll show you which countries you can travel to and which cities you should visit. We also compare the map size of RDR2 with that of its predecessor and introduce you to a few interactive maps that can support you on your adventure.
Before we start, a little spoiler warning: If you like to explore the map and the game world yourself and absolutely don’t want to know about it in advance, you’d better stop at this point.

Important places and cities in RDR 2
Your Wild West journey in RDR2 begins in the vast and picturesque, snow-capped mountains in the north / northwest of the map, which are generally known as The grizzlies knows. It’s fair to say that this is one of the most beautiful spots in the game – especially when the full moon lights up the night.
The beauty of nature is deceptive, however, because as one would expect, the temperatures in this area are quite low – even during the day. Accordingly, Arthur always has to protect himself from the cold and wrap himself in his winter coat. In addition, he should always feed himself and his horse well. Fast progress is almost always made difficult by the thick blanket of snow and the often dense trees contribute to the impassable terrain.
You will visit your first city in the game relatively quickly here: Valentine. The remote settlement at the foot of the mountain will provide you with a home for some time. Here you will find everything you need for your first few hours in the game, for example a gunsmith, a butcher, the office of the local sheriff and – most importantly – a salon. You can also learn and improve basic skills here and start the first side quests in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Let’s take a look at the northeast of the map. Here the landscape is already more densely populated, especially with cities like Annesburg and Van Hornlying on the coast. You’d better remember Van Horn. It is a trading post, so it offers a generous selection in all areas, provided you have the necessary money.
If you hike towards the center on the map, you will find yourself on the relatively central location Fort Wallace bump. It’s nice to look at, but you shouldn’t approach this place unless the story requires it – after all, you’re not exactly the good citizen next door and the fort is heavily fortified and even better armed.
Our brief overview continues in the southwest of the map. Here you will find two very important places. The first is Blackwater, which Arthur and the rest of the Van der Linde gang will talk about a lot. Not without reason, as it is an important pivot to a large part of the game.
The second location is a little further to the southwest. It is Armadillo, that veterans of the game series will surely still remember from Red Dead Redemption. If you are interested in comparing the two cities and what has happened in the years between the two games, you should watch the following video from our colleagues at VG24 / 7. You have strolled through the streets of the two cities and have not seen each other a little closer.
In addition to the two “important” places, there is of course more civilization in the south. But then more in the central south. Here you will find the small town Rhodes, where you will surely have fun in the local saloon (I just say “Moonshine”).
At the end of our little tour, let’s take a look at the southeast of the map. Here awaits you with St Denis the largest city in the game. It offers a home to pretty much everything and everyone and will almost certainly impress you with several aspects.
In the course of the story you will inevitably come to this busy place – not least because you will also find the “Trapper” here, where you can purchase unique outfits and items for yourself.
To the west of Saint Denis is the extensive marshland Lemoyne. Lemoyne is probably the most unique place on the map and home to countless crocodiles. You can also find a few outlaws here if you’re looking for outlaw gunslingers. With that we end our brief look at the map and the most important locations in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Interactive map for Read Dead Redemption 2
With an AAA title like RDR2, it comes as no surprise that fans take on the laborious task of creating an interactive map of the game world on which all important things are noted. Map comparison – How big is the map of RDR 2 vs. RDR 1
It’s arguably one of the most frequently asked questions people get clapped around the ears at Rockstar: How big is the Red Dead Redemption 2 map compared to Red Dead Redemption?
To date, the developers have not provided an exact figure for the proportions. You only hear answers like Rob Nelson, who said in an interview “She is much bigger!”. Ergo you have to get an idea of the size for yourself.
Fans tried this some time ago and put together the world maps of RDR 1 and 2 on one picture to get an approximate size comparison. How accurate this comparison is can only be found out once you’ve played both parts.
Regardless of the proportions of the two cards, the sheer size of a game world only plays a subordinate role at Rockstar. Nelson described it as “bigger is better” but only to a certain extent. As a developer you also have to consider how the players experience a large world map and it is particularly important that the world is “believable down to the last detail”. For this reason, the map of RDR 2 also has an unprecedented depth.
Are there any differences between the Red Dead 2 Redemption 2 map and Red Dead Online?
To make it short and sweet: No, the map of Red Dead Redemption 2 is also the same as that of Red Dead Online. The only notable difference is the way in which it is made available to you. While in the main game you first have to experience certain events within the magnificently staged story, the entire map is immediately available to you in online multiplayer. That’s why it’s also an advantage to have done a few laps in solo mode beforehand – otherwise the huge world in its entirety can quickly become intimidating.
