Rockstar North, the well-known studio behind the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series, appears to be developing Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) for the next generation of consoles. A job posting on the studio’s site shows that the company is currently looking for a programmer to help develop animation systems for an open-world game that will run on next-generation hardware: PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox’. Project Scarlett’.

It’s the first indication that Rockstar North is working on a title for the consoles due for release in late 2020, and given that Red Dead Redemption 2 is just over a year old, it makes sense that it’s Grand Theft Auto 6. The last GTA game was Grand Theft Auto V and was released on September 17, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, so we suspect that development is now well advanced.

Nevertheless, we remain curious whether the game in question will also appear for the current PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, because Red Dead Redemption 2 is the only game from Rockstar that has been developed specifically for this generation of consoles. Plus, a game for the next generation of consoles would mean ignoring a potential market of over 150 million consoles. On the other hand, parent company Take-Two has made a lot of money from microtransactions, which seems to reduce the need. Developing a game for two generations will always result in compromises, as developers have to consider the oldest hardware available. It will be better for the game to appear exclusively for the PS5 and Scarlett.

According to previous rumors, GTA 6 will be massive and set between Liberty City and Vice City, while also featuring missions in parts of San Andreas, such as Blaine County. Certain stores will sell different types of items in different eras. The dialogues with strangers from Red Dead Redemption 2 will also be implemented. The developer also has big plans for multiplayer with updates that will add new cities to the game. Rockstar games is said to be working closely with Microsoft and Sony on cloud gaming, which should help make online a never-ending process.

The story would be a standard GTA adventure against that. “In the game you will become a kind of drug lord. You start out as a simple criminal in Liberty City who does odd jobs and commits thefts. The player has to work his way up and end up in Vice City where you will join a famous gang. You are assigned to run affairs in Liberty City until you are returned to Vice City and soon become the city’s drug lord.”
