Security is always a top concern when it comes to storing private information on Dropbox. But no one really wants to give up the convenience of having their files synced across multiple devices and having seamless access to them. In other words, we can’t give up cloud storage services, but what we can do is encrypt the files in question before adding them to our Dropbox folder. If all of that sounds cumbersome, Secryptor aims to provide an answer by fusing the convenience of Dropbox with pre-upload encryption so you don’t have to worry about prying eyes seeing your files. The app can also store encrypted files offline, is compatible with Windows and Mac OS X, and is available for free on both platforms.
The multilingual app has a simple interface, encryption is done via AES 256-bit standards, making files difficult to crack. It produces an encrypted copy of the selected file with its own custom SKT extension so that no other program can access the information stored in it until you decrypt it with Secryptor again.
Once you’ve installed Secryptor by following its fully German setup wizard, the most basic operation you’ll need to perform is to encrypt a file. To do so, you can click the ‘Encrypt file’ button on its user interface to select the input file from your computer. Then it asks you to select the destination folder i.e. Dropbox or local directory.
Dropbox integration allows you to encrypt and upload files directly to your Dropbox folder. If you select Dropbox in the target channel, the app generates an API code for you when you are logged into your Dropbox account, and you need to copy and paste this code into Secryptor as shown in the screenshot below. Then you should also select the Dropbox folder on your computer.
The next step is to enter the desired password, then wait while the software encrypts the corresponding file. This can take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on the size of the file.
Beyond file encryption, another valuable feature of Secryptor is the ability to decrypt the same file so you can use it again. For that, you can click ‘Decrypt File’, select the SKT file from your computer or Dropbox folder, type your corresponding password and that’s it, the process is that simple. Of course, the time it will take to decrypt the file will also depend on the size of the file, which means that any large file will generally take longer to decrypt.
Overall, Secryptor does a great job of balancing ease of use and strong security. The Dropbox integration is very useful and the fact that it is available for free is another plus.
