SEGA Mega Drive Mini, everything that is known about the mythical retro console that will return this September with 40 classic games
The return of the legendary 16-bit console from SEGA. In the middle of last year, Sega announced the return of its classic Mega Drive console, thus joining the successful NES Mini and Super Nintendo Mini that are achieving a good level of sales. Little by little new details have appeared about this Mega Drive Mini and here we will tell you everything we know about the new SEGA console.
After the warm reception that the presentation had in the US and Europe, SEGA decided to modify the initial approach and this new Mega Drive Mini will not be based on the technology of the AtGames company as initially planned. This has led to its presentation being delayed, but in exchange SEGA has advanced that several of the members of the original team of the Mega Drive itself will be responsible for the redesign.
What will the design of the Mega Drive Mini look like
Mega Drive is a console that goes beyond its mythical games. Not only are we facing the console that saw ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ or ‘Streets of Rage’ grow, it is also one of the most beloved brands. An iconic product that marked an era.
“This is a completely different version from the one Haruki Satomi unveiled last year at Sega Fes,” Hiroyuki Miyazaki explains to IGN. It refers to ATGames technology that was initially rumored to be used. For this new version, a design similar to the original Type 1 Mega Drive will be offered and will have details like the cartridge slot will open and the volume slider will go up and down.
SEGA will offer different versions between those of the West and those of Japan. The Mega Drive Mini will offer two three-button remotes and a two-meter cable, while in the Japanese version there will be an edition with a six-button remote and another edition with two controls.
These controllers will be connected to the console through two USB ports that will be found on the front. A different connection and therefore this Mega Drive Mini will not be compatible with the original controls.
What differences will there be with the original
In addition to the USB ports, this Mega Drive Mini includes a power cord and a HDMI output to connect to TV.
The original Mega Drive had a mini jack connector to add headphones directly to the console, however this feature would not be included in the new one.
In addition to the connectors, another important change from the original is the size. The intention is to keep the original proportion but this new Mega Drive Mini will be 55% smaller than the original. Being the width of the new console approximately the same size as the original remote control.
What games will it offer
The new mini consoles are an excellent opportunity to revisit mythical games. In the Mega Drive Mini, it has been confirmed during the celebration of the SEGA Fan Meet Up event in Japan that it will feature 40 sets.
As we read in Kotatu, the classic games list will be different for the Japanese and European versions.
These are ten of the confirmed games that the Mega Drive Mini will have for the European version:
- ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’
- ‘Ecco the Dolphin’
- Castlevania: Bloodlines
- ‘Space Harrier 2’
- ‘Shining Force’
- ‘Comix Zone’
- ‘Altered Beast’
- ‘Gunstar Heroes’
- ‘Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Machine ‘
- ‘Toe Jam & Earl’
Meanwhile, in the Japanese version it has been confirmed that ‘Puyo Puyo Tsu’, ‘Vampire Killer’, ‘Wrestleball’, ‘Rent a Hero’ and ‘Madou Monogatari’ will also appear.

SEGA has confirmed that all games will allow you to save the game at any time and will work at 60Hz, a change with respect to the original experience but that will offer a much more fluid result and according to the times. Additionally, games like Castlevania: The New Generation will include the different versions released in the different markets.
For the Mega Drive Mini interface, SEGA has offered a preview where you can see that it will be in line with the aesthetics of the 90s of the game boxes.
When will it be available and at what price
The iconic Mega Drive Mini will be available in the West on September 19th. The date has been confirmed during the SEGA Fan Meet Up celebration and the price has also been revealed.
The SEGA “Genesis Mini”, as it has been called for now, will arrive in stores around the world in September at the same price at a price of 6,890 yen for the one-controller version and 8,980 yen for the two-controller version.
In pounds it will be 69.99 while its starting price in Europe will be 79.90 euros with the two controls. I really want to try this new mini version of one of the most mythical retro consoles.
