Shadow of the Tomb Raider – Preview.

For over 20 years Florian has been very happy with Lara Croft and at an event he was able to play for a few hours with the latest version of the ultimate game babe, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

After Tomb Raider in 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2015, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the final installment in this trilogy, where we saw Lara grow up to become the Tomb Raider she has now become. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider Lara is a lot more mature and she is clearly comfortable in her role of the baddass as we know her. She is tough, raw, dark, ruthless, a bit over the and even a bit lugubrious. She doesn’t give a and my god, that attitude suits her!

Rock-hard aunt

In the first part of the trilogy, the young Lara had a lot of trouble with violence, but when she arrived in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, she has grown into a tough aunt, who can even be called a bit bitchy at times. Instead of being hunted, Lara is now the predator herself, who can move almost invisibly through the wooded areas due to the many stealth elements. For example, she can now completely cover herself with mud (sexy!) To blend in with certain backgrounds with the same dark color. Or use ivy to disappear in, which grows against the walls.

What also immediately stands out are the super slick graphics, holy . The previous Tomb Raider games weren’t exactly ugly either, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider surpasses it in every way. The light effects are really beautiful and immediately create a cool atmosphere in the woods and in the many tombs that you can visit. In addition, Lara herself has never appeared so beautifully and the character looks a lot more like Camilla Ludington, the actress who records Lara’s voice and takes care of the motion capture. And yes, that’s a good thing, because Camilla is BEA-Utiful!

Apocalypse

The gameplay is familiar, but it does have some more layers. This has to do with the story in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Without revealing too much, Lara makes a choice at the start of the game that she should not have made. This creates a true apocalypse, in which she has to deal with extreme weather, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, thunderstorms and even tsunamis. You will encounter these kinds of natural phenomena several times during your adventure, which makes for ridiculously spectacular gameplay elements. Nathan Drake would be proud of that level.

On the other hand, there is more to be puzzled in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, in the many different tombs you encounter. Climbing and scrambling and switching switches of ancient machines is the order of the day and the tombs I saw were all challenging and original, both the obligatory ones you encounter during the story, and the many extra tombs you can visits by side quests.

Magnified

Shadow of the Tomb Raider promises to be the greatest Tomb Raider game ever when it comes to game surface, villages, NPCs and side quests, with the largest open world hub to date. The beginning of the game is therefore a lot more scripted than the freedom you ultimately have. A bit the same as in the previous Tomb Raider games, but enlarged even further.

Isn’t Shadow of the Tomb Raider just more of the same? To some extent, but that’s not a bad thing at all in this case. Lara stays fresh, the gameplay is perfected, the game looks stunningly beautiful, there is a shitload of extra content and the game plays wonderfully. As far as I’m concerned, this is not the end of the trilogy at all, but before I really have to worry about it, I’m going to enjoy the game, which will be in stores on September 14. This can hardly go wrong, this will be the coolest Tomb Raider game in the trilogy!
