Actual for Platform: NSW
There was a time when the publishing house Namco released new games in the series Sir. DRILLER almost every year. Initially, they were created for arcade machines, then they were ported to a variety of consoles including Game Boy, Dreamcast, and PlayStation. But outside of Japan, not all parts of the series appeared, and one of them – Sir. DRILLER DrillLand for 18 years has remained exclusive to the Land of the Rising Sun. After nearly two decades, the company, which has long since changed its name to Bandai namco, I decided to correct this flaw and offer the whole world not a regular port, but a remaster of a classic arcade.
Take care of your head
Essence Sir. DRILLER simple: in the role of one of the drillers we walk down the “glass” (it makes sense to use the terms in Tetris – externally the games are somewhat similar), destroying blocks and winning points. The blocks are painted in different colors and the same stones merge, sometimes forming bizarre shapes. If you destroy the blocks that served as another support, they will start falling in a second, putting the life of the hero in danger. When something falls on him, he will lose a life or lose some of his health – it all depends on the conditions.
In order not to offer a trivial list of modes, as is often done in arcade games, the creators Drillland realized the idea with an amusement park. The main characters enter the world’s first underground amusement park and participate in its opening – they choose the level of difficulty at the entrance (for beginners or for those who want to return to the 2002nd), and then they have fun. From the start, five attractions are available to them, in which the main idea is preserved Sir. DRILLER, but there are unique conditions that require each of them to be approached in a special way.
Sometimes you also have to fight.
The ‘World Bur-tour’ attraction against the backdrop of the others seems the least tricky – as the hero tries to break through to the bottom, his air supply runs out, and we not only have to keep track of the falling blocks. our heads, but also pick up capsules with air. When the air ends, a life is taken. The Star Drill is not much different in the rules, but there are question marks added to the regular blocks, which simplifies the task or makes it a little more difficult – the transfer at the very beginning of the level, for example. , is not very pleasant, but sometimes it’s worth the risk.
In the “House of Horrors” the conditions are complicated – the character is in a cursed mansion and must take 20 crystals from the ghosts, collecting holy water. When the water is used, the ghosts freeze for a while – you have to destroy the areas where they are stuck with a drill. On each floor, the number of crystals required increases, and because of the bats taking life points, it is necessary to look for healing capsules. This attraction is as exciting as the Chronicles of Burri, where we collect statues and try not to take damage from creeping spikes, fire and rolling rocks.
In the damned mansion, the atmosphere is appropriate.
The most interesting mechanics appear in Druaga’s Pit, where the hero is sent to a maze under the castle to kill the monster and save the temple servant. There health is washed away with each use of the drill, and the “glasses” have several outlets (you have to dig not only down – sometimes the door is somewhere on the left or right), and in the end you have to meet the boss. Collectibles are sent to inventory and can be used to gain benefits: one restores health, the other allows you to jump on two blocks standing on top of each other, the third protects the character when something falls on his head …
Park difficult to leave
Whichever attraction you choose, Drillland you get great pleasure. It seems like straightforward gameplay here, but it becomes obvious why the series has lived on for so long – it’s fun to break through and see how the blocks that have lost their support fall on top of each other and are automatically destroyed when the same colors merge. And the conditions that vary depending on the attraction bring variety – in the same Burri Chronicles you have to drill blocks not as recklessly as in the World Burtura, because rocks rolling in all directions do not give rest. And they won’t be able to ignore them completely – it’s so easy not to pick up the statues needed to pass.
Hurry – you make people laugh.
Each race has more difficult versions in which there are more dangers, and it is especially interesting to fight for the first places in the rankings online. Only those who have never used an aid get there. For the points earned during the game, you can buy bonuses that simplify the gameplay in the local store – with one pass you start with protection, with the other the number of “lives” increases to five, with the third, you are making more air than usual when you take the capsules.
You can also spend money on card games to supplement the local collection. This is just an additional incentive to Drillland – the cards show the most characters in the universe Sir. Driller with detailed descriptions and even biographies. Although this is an arcade puzzle, you read these texts with some interest – it is not that often that games like this have such a rich background. But the videos before the rides start and after they go through seem superfluous – jokes sometimes jump into them normally, but there is very little meaning in the dialogue between the characters.
The game is translated into Russian, but the rating is only available in Japanese.
But these videos, apparently, have been completely redesigned and look a lot sharper than in the original. Drillland unlike the game that came out almost two dozen years ago – you never feel like you’re spending some kind of junk with the GameCube. The only thing that points to this fact is the presence of background images on the sides during gameplay, however, they are not annoying and could easily pass as a design idea if the game were released this year. Well, the soundtrack, it seems, only got better over time – you want to include those groovy songs in the background when you need to distract yourself from the game.
Sir. DRILLER DrillLand – A great arcade puzzle that devours free time and occasionally causes the desire to come back to it. Playing on Switch, of course, is preferable due to portability, but on other platforms it won’t be any easier to pull away from it than anything. Tetris effect. Especially in local multiplayer, where in split screen mode, players compete against each other. Successful reissue and over the past 18 years Drillland I have not lost my virtues.
Benefits: fun gameplay with clear mechanics; several rides (modes) with additional rules; collectibles allow you to better understand the universe; excellent visual style that has not lost its charm in the remaster; wonderful soundtrack.
Less: the videos are cute, but make no sense; a competitive online mode would work fine here, but it isn’t.
