The iPhone’s camera makes a shutter noise when in use. This noise is sometimes annoying, and it may be convenient to remove it.
We will see in this article several methods to remove camera sound on iPhone.
1. If the device is not jailbroken
On the vast majority of iPhones, it is possible to mute the sound in several simple ways. We are going to list here 3 methods to do it.
Method 1: Put iPhone in silent mode
The first method is to simply put the iPhone in silent mode. You can do this by pressing the button on the side of your device.
If the button is disabled, you can either change it or use the AssistiveTouch to replace it.
Method 2: set the volume to minimum
Another method is to set the volume to minimum. Unfortunately with this method, the problem is not completely solved. You can use the volume button – on the side of your iPhone. Here too, be careful because the sound will also be lowered for your ringtone.
Method 3: plug in headphones
Apple’s motto is “think different”. This is what we are going to do. If you can’t turn off the sound of the camera, there is one solution: plug in headphones. When the headphones are plugged in, audio in apps is output to the headphones by default. Including iPhone camera sound. By plugging in headphones, the sound will therefore come out through the headphones, making it almost inaudible by the people around you. You can therefore take pictures again in complete discretion.
Method 4: plug the speaker holes
On some iPhone models, the camera sound is really not mute. You can try all of the above methods, nothing will work. This is actually because of laws in some countries that have been put in place to combat people taking pictures discreetly under girls’ skirts.
If your iPhone is one of those iPhones where you can’t mute the camera, and you can’t unblock it, there is only one workaround left.
The speaker output must be plugged. On most iPhone models, the speaker is at the bottom right. At the bottom left is the microphone. You can do the test by plugging the openings with your finger to see what will attenuate the sound. This will not cut off the sound completely, but it will be like putting a silencer on a pistol: it will already be a little more discreet.
2. If the device is jailbroken
The jailbreak of an iPhone allows access to its files. It also allows you to install applications not authorized by Apple because they modify system files. The jailbreak can therefore be very useful in our case. Indeed, it is a question of modifying the behavior of the Photos application by deactivating the sound on the application.
Method 1: use a cydia tweak
The first way to mute the sound with a jailbroken iPhone is by installing a tweak on Cydia:
- Launch Cydia
- Search for the app NoCamSound
- Install the app
- Respring the device
Method 2: Edit iPhone Files
The second way to mute the sound with a jailbroken iPhone is as follows:
- Access files on your iPhone with a program like iFile for iOS or iFunBox for PC and Mac.
- Go to the folder/ System / Library / Audio / UISounds / then rename the file photoShutter.caf in photoShutter.old
- Respring the device
- If you need to reactivate the sound, do the reverse manipulation
Remove Camera Sound on iPhone
Do you have camera noise when taking a photo with your iPhone and you can’t turn it off? It’s probably because you bought an iPhone in Asia or when you got a refurbished iPhone.
These iPhones are intended for the Asian market (Japan, South Korea) and it is impossible to deactivate this noise natively. However, thanks to the jailbreak, it will be possible to remove this noise permanently. Note that it is mandatory to jailbreak your iPhone to do this manipulation, but it will be possible to remove this jailbreak later.
Note: The only solution to remove this noise is to jailbreak your iPhone. This is the only way to permanently get rid of that unpleasant sound when taking a photo.
I myself paid the price by buying a new reconditioned iPhone 7, which was originally intended for Japan.
I advise you to be careful before ordering a refurbished iPhone or buying a new iPhone directly. On some sites (which I will not mention), the majority of second-hand iPhones sold come from the Asian market (because the resale margin is higher due to the low redemption costs).
- A jailbroken iPhone (iOS 12 tutorial / iOS 13 tutorial)
- 3 minutes of his time
For those who are on iOS 12, follow my jailbreak tutorial. For those on iOS 13, follow this tutorial.
Step 1: Open Cydia.
Step 2: In the Search tab at the bottom right, find the “Filza File Manager” application (completely free, on the BigBoss source).
Step 3: Click on the “Install” button at the top right (instead of my “Modify” button), then confirm the installation.
Step 4: Exit Cydia, return to your iPhone’s springboard (desktop) and open the downloaded Filza app.
This is what the Filza app looks like:
It is a file manager that gives access to all the files on your iPhone. Including sound files (and therefore camera noise).
Step 5: Navigate to the folders as follows: System> Library> Audio> UISounds then delete the file named photoShutter.caf by dragging the file to the left (or by long pressing on it and clicking on the Trash icon).
Step 6: You no longer have camera noise when taking a photo, Snapchat or whatever.
Note: If you still have the noise, make sure photoShutter.caf is deleted, and if not restart your iPhone.
These steps worked for me, it had been a few months that I was looking for a solution, quite quick and easy in the end.

How to turn off camera sound on an iPhone
Toggle silent switch
The easiest way to mute the camera sound on your iPhone X, 8, 7, 6, SE or any other model is to: flip the mute switch on the side of your device. All iPhone models have this switch on the top left of the phone.
If the switch is closer to the screen, your device will play sounds normally. When it’s in the Quiet position, you will see orange below. In silent mode, in addition to only vibrating for alerts, it also prevents the sound of the device from playing.
Enable live photos
On iPhone 6s and later, you can capture live photos. These include a few seconds of video and audio before and after the photo is taken. If you turn on Live Photos, your iPhone will not play camera sound.
To turn live photos on / off in the Camera app, just tap the circular icon at the top center of the screen. When it turns yellow, you’ve turned on Live Photos and you don’t hear a shutter sound.
Lower the volume manually
Audio from your iPhone’s camera plays at the volume currently set on your device. You can. Is your iPhone volume not working as it should? Try this Use the Volume buttons on the side of your phone to adjust this, but if you press them while using the camera, it will take a photo.
So, before opening the Camera app, you just need to press and hold Volume down button until it shows Mute . You can also slide your finger from the bottom of the screen to access Control Center and lower the volume this way. If you lower it all the way, the sound effect of the camera will be muted.
How to turn off screenshot sound on iPhone
If you want to turn off the sound effect similar to that reproduced during a screenshot, just toggle the mute switch to the silent position (so that the orange appears).
Note that if you live in Japan or Korea, all phones sold in those regions have hard-coded camera audio that you cannot turn off. This is to prevent people from taking inappropriate photos of others without their knowledge. Therefore, the only way to turn off these sounds is to use jailbreak methods, which is beyond the scope of this article.
