For some time there have been reports suggesting that Marvel’s Avengers did poorly on the market. Now finally she admitted publishing company Square Enix. The Japanese stated that the production sold below expectations.
The failure is painful because it made the entire segment of the publisher’s high-budget HD games (the other two being MMO productions and browser/mobile titles) bring a loss in the last quarter. Without the Avengers, this department would have made a profit. President Yosuke Matsuda, however, does not intend to give up this project. He hopes that with the planned additional content, the company will eventually be able to turn this failure into a success.
Square Enix hopes that the DLC and updates will bring the game straight by the end of the current financial year, i.e. until March 31, 2021. At least until then, we can expect intensive development of the project.
Marvel’s Avengers did so poorly that the production costs of the game still have not been recouped. It is worth recalling that analysts estimate the production budget at USD 170-190 million, and sales at only 3 million copies.
I asked Cruiser, who among the members of the editorial office is the biggest fan of Marvel’s Avengers, for a comment.
The poor condition of Marvel’s Avengers is not a secret – the playerbase outside the Sony console has practically fallen to zero, and even on the aforementioned platform, fewer and fewer players are reaching for this title. To make matters worse, the update introducing the new heroine – Kate Bishop – planned for October/November – has been postponed to December, while the grandly announced techyon breaches turned out to be a repeat of well-known missions with a slight twist in mechanics.
The premiere of the new content will be a huge test, as the announcements regarding the campaign accompanying Kate sound promising. The quality of these “operations” will, in my opinion, be the ultimate “to be or not to be” for the Avengers. – cruiser
Recall that Marvel’s Avengers was released on September 4 on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Google Stadia. Releases for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 are also planned, but their releases have been postponed to next year.
