the Atari catalog and own ROMs on mobiles, tablets, PCs and TVs
Plex is a multimedia service that has gained popularity in recent years for allowing organize and stream your own library of every user of series and movies. Likewise, it has integrated photos, music or podcasts as well. A new category is added to all this now: video game.
As the company has announced, they launch Plex Arcade from today. Its name could not be more descriptive, it is a subscription service for playing arcade video games directly on the same devices that Plex can currently run on.
Atari, Sega and Nintendo games among others
In collaboration with Atari, have integrated “dozens of games” from the catalog of the popular video game brand so that they can be played in streaming. Unlike Google Stadia, Amazon Luna or Microsoft XCloud …, this is not about having the most powerful console or mobile games. In its place we find classic arcade games that hardly require any graphics power.
The most interesting aspect of all this is surely the possibility of uploading own ROMs and emulators. If the user has their own ROMs that are not in the Atari catalog, they can be uploaded to their Plex library and play these games on any of the devices with access to Plex. Something very similar to what they do with series, movies or music.
As indicated on their support website, you can add ROMs from Arcade, Atari (2600, 5200, 7800), Sega (Genesis, Game Gear, Master System, 32X) and Nintendo (NES, Super NES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance). To play these video games, you must have access to the Plex library running locally or on a remote device. This is essentially the same requirement as for the rest of the multimedia content on Plex.
As far as compatibility is concerned, Plex Arcade is compatible with any device that runs Plex and can be connected to a game controller or keyboard. It therefore works in Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android TV, Mac and Windows. You can use almost any keyboard or console controller you want, recommend the Sony DualShock 4 or the Xbox controller
The service has a cost of $ 2.99 per month for Plex Pass users (already Plex’s premium subscription service). For the rest of the users without Plex Pass, access to arcade video games is for $ 4.99 per month. It offers the option to try it for seven days for free.
