Update – October 19, 2019
Our list of Best Dragon Ball Games was originally published in July 2017. As we have done with other lists, it has now been updated to include more recent and distinguishing games.
Original – July 26, 2017
If they were born in the late 1980s or early 1990s, they probably grew up watching the Dragon Ball saga on television. This is my case, and to this day, it remains one of my favorite sagas. The success of the Akira Toriyama saga grew immensely and, inevitably, the first Dragon Ball video games began to appear. The first example was Dragon Ball: Dragon Daihikyō, developed for Super Cassette Vision. In this game they controlled little Goku in his magic cloud while shooting at opponents. Since then, video games with the Dragon Ball license have not stopped appearing. It is unbelievable that even today, in 2019, new games continue to be announced, more than 32 years after the launch of the first game (the new animated series, Dragon Ball Super, helped the saga to regain strength).
However, we all know that adaptations to video games can go awry, in fact, that’s what happens in most cases. Dragon Ball adaptations are no exception. Dragon Ball games are many, but you can count on those fingers that are really worth playing. That’s what you’ll find on this list: the best Dragon Ball games, those that are essential for fans of the saga.
8. Dragon Ball Legends
- Release Date – May 2018
- Platforms – iOS and Android
Dragon Ball Legends is a fighting game available for smartphones for over a year. The download is completely free, but it was built to be monetized as a Gacha (think of it as loot boxes in which you can play characters with whom you can play). Although this type of game / monetization is known to the Whales (players who spend hundreds or thousands of euros a month), it is possible to enjoy Dragon Ball Legends without spending money.
The main factors for playing Dragon Ball Legends are the constant news and the portability associated with smartphones (you can play whenever you have 5 or 10 minutes free). The action of the game takes place in real time, but the strokes of the characters depend on cards that appear to you throughout the fight. At any given moment, you can have a maximum of four cards, which are divided between physical attack, Ki attack, super attack and special attack. Each character also has associated special abilities and different statistics, giving the game a highly strategic dimension.

7. Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle
- Release Date – July 2015 (Global version)
- Platforms – iOS and Android
Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle is another Gacha from Bandai Namco for smartphones. It is much older than Dragon Ball Legends and therefore had more time to improve. The objective is to create powerful teams based on the characters’ leadership skills (which can have several cards) and to complete events and other challenging activities. Think of the game as a FIFA Ultimate Team with Dragon Ball characters. Like Dragon Ball Legends, it is possible to play without spending money, but be warned: the characters you want will not always come out.
As combats work in turns, collecting colored spheres to give KI to your characters, it is a game that you can play without much attention. Right now Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle is better than ever. There are powerful F2P cards, lots of content and the super attacks of the characters have never looked so good. In some cases, they are identical recreations of the best moments in anime.

6. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
- Release Date – October 2016
- Platforms – PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch
I was undecided in the game for this position, not least because there are several Dragon Ball games with interesting ideas but which then fail in other aspects. Still, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is different from all previous games. It is a game that adopts some elements of the MMORPGs and that allows fans to create their own character within the universe of Dragon Ball. These two aspects have earned him a place on the list of the best games in the saga.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is far from perfect. The unmarked edges are visible, and the combat system, although it has improved compared to the first, still has no flaws. However, these are failures that we manage to live with due to the refreshing concept within Dragon Ball games. We also liked the cooperative aspect and the original story, although it relies heavily on the different Dragon Ball sagas.
