Cheaters have always been a part of the game. Some gamers get into it, because real players of course play their games without cheating. But be honest, you must have entered a code to see what would happen. Sometimes you just don’t have the time to do it on your own or you are still benefiting from those extra lives. Some games are very difficult, so why not put the luck to your liking?
In this article you will read the most notable cheats from thirty years of video games. If you’ve played a lot of games, you’ll probably recognize a few, like Grand Theft Auto for example. Or what about the Konami code, so famous that it even appears in the movies? Spoiler: It also appears in our list.
Age of Empires: Summoning Futuristic Vehicle (1997)
There are a lot of cheats in Ag of Empires that make it easy to find the match, but this one is very remarkable. Go to the text screen and type in “BIGDADDY”. You can now expect a Big Daddy from BioShock, but unfortunately he didn’t exist back then. What you get is a Winsett Z sports car with a man firing a rocket launcher. They don’t appear in our history books at all!
Play Call of Duty: Black Ops: Zork (2010)
While there are better things to do in Call of Duty: Black Ops than reading a book, it’s still worth looking for the next Easter Egg. In the main menu, you can select more than just options: press the L and R keys to get out of your seat. You will find a computer behind you. Type Zork over there to play the classic text adventure. Because when you’ve had enough of all this visual violence. Via this computer, you can also type DOA to start Dead Ops Arcade.
Tomb Raider: Exploding Lara (1997)
Tomb Raider games are also classic games in which the cheats have been extensively developed. To activate it, you had to perform a whole ritual with Lara, for example to unlock all weapons or skip a level. The weirdest cheat comes in the form of an exploding Lara. Step sideways left, right, left, forward and backward. Now turn Lara about three times. Then jump forward and press the roll button. Boom! It is of no use to you, but it is certainly spectacular. Please save your game first!
Dead Space: Making Isaac Roll in Credits and Nodes (2008)
A cheat list isn’t complete without some old-fashioned code to make your job easier. Recent games still include them, including Dead Space. With plenty of credits and nodes in your pocket, you are completely ready to level up and buy all the weapons. Press X, Y, Y, Y, X, X, Y (or equivalent on PlayStation 3) for 10,000 credits and Y, X, Y, X, X, Y, X, X, Y, X, X, Y (idem) for five nodes. Now you don’t have to be afraid of Necromorphs anymore.
Panzer Dragoon: Infinite Continues (1995)
If you own the original Panzer Dragoon for the Sega Genesis, congratulations! You are the owner of a true cult classic and one of the rarest games available. It’s also quite a difficult title because, hey, riding a dragon is not as easy as it looks in most movies! Then go to the main menu and press start, up, X, right, Y, down, Z, left, Y, up and X for continuous infinity.
