Just as Nintendo promised, ‘Mario Kart Tour’ It is now available as part of a private beta for Android users in Japan and the United States that will end on June 4. Being a beta, Nintendo seeks to polish some aspects of the game before its official launch, so nothing guarantees that what we currently have will be kept for the final version of the game, so new features and functions could appear that right now Are not avaliables.

As part of this beta of ‘Mario Kart Tour’, the internet is filling with photos and videos showing the gameplay and options offered by the new game for Nintendo smartphones. Therefore, we have decided collect all available information to make a day of what this new ‘Mario Kart’ for mobile is like.

When Mario Kart meets microtransactions and the ‘pay to win’

When doing a quick search on Twitter, we will find various users who explain details of this ‘Mario Kart Tour’, where one of the aspects that attracts the most attention are the micropayments or in-app purchases, which will offer an advantage in each race.

Remember that ‘Mario Kart Tour’ will be a free game for smartphones with in-app purchases, as happened with ‘Super Mario Run’, ‘Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp’ ‘and’ Fire Emblem Heroes’. From the latter, Nintendo is estimated to have raised more than $ 500 million from in-app purchases.

For this reason, ‘Mario Kart Tour’ will maintain this free-to-play business model where it will be possible acquire objects or characters to increase our chances of winning in each race. As explained in Kotaku, the currency of the game to make transactions will be the green gem, which will be used to participate in a ‘gacha’ machine, which are the ones used in Japan to access various types of prizes.

By participating in this machine We will unlock characters, vehicles, objects and some other surprises. Each of these participations will cost us five green gems. In this beta, the green gem purchase system is not enabled, so it is not known how much it will represent in money.

To obtain green gems without having to disburse money we will have to collect coins during the races, which will help us to buy objects in the game store, mainly aesthetics and where the gems are included. We also have stars, which are used to unlock new tracks and challenges. In fact, on Kotaku they mention that some stars unlock gifts, including gem packs.

As in previous Nintendo games for smartphones, micropayments are not mandatory, but they do help you gain an advantage and access new tracks and characters.

Looks like Mario Kart Tour beta is pretty hardcore with regards to monetization.

Multi-level gacha for drivers, karts and gliders.

Rare drivers have advantages during races.

Stamina system limits races available on an hourly basis.

(Subject to change, this is a beta.)

How to play

Let’s put microtransactions aside a bit and focus on the gameplay. ‘Mario Kart Tour’, like ‘Super Mario Run’, It is played in vertical format and the kart keeps accelerating automatically, since we will only take care of turning and giving direction to the kart with our finger on the screen. When we remove our finger from the screen, the kart straightens and remains fixed.

To launch objects we will only need to touch the screen once, which applies to objects such as shells, shells or mushrooms, since both the star and the bullet (Bullet Bill) will activate immediately.

To have access to these objects we will have at our disposal the classic surprise boxes distributed throughout the track, the difference with respect to previous Mario Kart deliveries is that if we do not use our object and break a box, We will lose the object we had and we will be assigned a new one.

Kotaku claims that the game is designed to have online competitions, but in this beta this function is not enabled yet, or it does not seem, and it is that each race is made against strangers where it is not clear if they are other users or are controlled by the automatic system of the game.

How is the mechanics in each race

In this beta there are two cups, each with three circuits and each race will be two laps. It should be noted that races are not unlimited, that is, we will not be able to spend hours playing. For this we will have a heart bar that will be depleted with each race, once it is finished we will no longer be able to play, unless we wait a while or buy hearts with green gems. Apparently, to recover each heart we will have to wait 15 minutes and each race takes a heart from us.

An interesting point is that each character will have an advantage on certain tracks, as well as differentiating elements with respect to the rest of the characters. But it is also the other way around, since these characters will also have certain disadvantages on some tracks.

For example, Toad is given the ability to store three objects instead of just one; or the case of Morton, which begins with the impulse of a mushroom in each race. In short, we can no longer marry a single character forever, we will have to have a strategy on each track if we want to take advantage and win.
