It has been leaked ad nauseam, but it was not until today that Google has officially presented the new Google Chromecast with Google TV. It has done so alongside three devices, namely: Google Pixel 5, Google Pixel 4a (5G) and the new Google Nest speaker. The new Chromecast maintains the essence of the previous models, but Google has given it a spin and made it more complete. How? Converting it to an HDMI dongle with Android TV.

Unlike the previous Chromecast, which depend on the mobile or tablet to cast content, the new Chromecast with Google TV is independent. It is a kind of Xiaomi Mi TV Stick or Amazon Fire TV Stick, that is, it has a own operating system (Android TV with Google TV, which we will talk about later) and works like a set-top box with Android, only it is smaller. And as such, it has its own remote control.

Now with remote control

The new Chromecast with Google TV is similar to the previous models, although it is somewhat longer. From Google they have explained that it is made with 49% recycled plastic and that it can be obtained in three colors: white, salmon and blue. On the outside there are no great news, since in essence it is still a Chromecast to use: It has a cable with HDMI that we will connect to the TV and another that will go directly to the outlet. The interesting thing is in the interior and in the control, of course.

With Google Assistant and Chromecast we can access and control Nest’s IoT product ecosystem

Because one of the novelties of the new Chromecast is that it has built-in remote control. This has infrared, Bluetooth, accelerometer, volume buttons, a button dedicated to Google Assistant (with which we can invoke the assistant and ask him to put a movie, for example), two buttons with direct access to YouTube and Netflix, input button, microphone and a button to turn the TV on and off. It works, by the way, with two AAA batteries.

In terms of specifications, the Chromecast with Google TV supports up to 4K at 60 FPS, HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos 5.1. It has all the features of Chromecast, such as sending videos from the mobile or playing Google Meet calls, and has audio casting, Speaker Group, multiroom and Stream Transfer to transfer the playback of content from one room to another.

And also with Google TV

But without a doubt, the main novelty of the Google Chromecast with Google TV is, of course, Google TV. As we said before, the Chromecast is no longer a dongle to broadcast content, but it is a dongle with Google TV, which we can understand as a “Personalization layer”, in quotes, from Android TV. The operating system is Android TV, but on top of it it has a “personalized experience”, that is, an interface with extra functions. That is Google TV.

The Chromecast with Google TV, being based on Android TV, is compatible with all Android TV apps that are in Google Play (about 6,500), so you can download games, music services, streaming apps, etc. In fact, streaming apps have a major role in the new Chromecast interface.

When we turn on the device, the main screen will appear with personalized suggestions of the services to which we are subscribed. That includes Netflix, YouTube and, as a novelty, Disney +, which has also been integrated with Chromecast. It also has a to-do list and allows you to add content to a watchlist from your phone or computer so that when you turn on the TV, that content is waiting for you.

Versions and price of Google Chromecast with Google TV
