Will there be a third part of The Last of Us?

Discussions about The Last of Us: Part II, the sequel to the well-received PlayStation exclusive from 2013, are still ongoing. A few days ago, the vice president of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, thanked the fans for such great interest in the production, thus commenting quite sarcastically on the wave of hate that has recently flooded the internet. On the other hand, in the extensive (and full of spoilers) interview on IndieWire The developer also touched on the topic of the next installment of the series.

When asked to comment on the plans for the third part of The Last of Us, Druckmann made it clear that it was too early to talk about it at all, but if the creators were to get down to it, they would face a tough task. Creating a sequel that conveys similar emotions as the original and retains its spirit has already been problematic. Designing the next installment seems to be even more of a challenge.

With the first game, there were no expectations and we could create anything. But now that we had established certain characters, themes, and methods, we felt that in order to justify making Part 2, we needed to do not only something the fans would enjoy, but also something that would fit with the emotional core that was in the first game. And the same problem could arise with the third part.

At the end, Druckmann also noted that for now he does not know what the next sequel could look like, which would retain what the previous parts offered. However, that doesn’t mean it will never happen.

The Last of Us 2 was released on June 19 exclusively on PlayStation 4 consoles. The production delighted the reviewers, according to whom it is a strong candidate for the game of the year. However, their opinion is not shared by many Internet users who negatively assess the new title of Naughty Dog.
