The Last of Us Part 2 will be the longest Naughty Dog game ever.
Last night we found out that we have to wait until February 21 to play The Last of Us Part 2, and right after that game director Neil Druckmann announced that it will be the most ambitious and longest game Naughty Dog has ever made. As if there wasn’t enough hype yet!
Immediately after revealing the release date of The Last of Us Part 2, game director Neil Druckmann jumped into the PlayStation forum to give some more context, and basically everything he has to say is good news. He says that this is the most ambitious and longest game that Naughty Dog has ever made:
What we realized pretty early on is that we were putting together Naughty Dog’s most ambitious and longest game in our 35 year history. To tell this kind of story the game needed to be massive.

This already sounds promising, but on top of that, an attentive viewer noticed that the Special Edition of The Last of Us 2 will be delivered on two discs. This is striking, because this has hardly happened in this generation. One of the last games to be released on two discs is Red Dead Redemption 2, and as everyone knows, that game is huge. So it seems that the second part in this series is really going to be a lot bigger.
Druckmann also released a few things about the development of The Last of Us Part 2:

We began working on this game over five years ago. It’s hard to describe the immense pressure of following up the first game. We know how much you love this world and its characters – especially Ellie and Joel. Believe me, we’re fans as well. We love them. Which is why we spent years crafting a game that we feel will do them justice, telling a nuanced story that deals with the core question: how far would you go to exact justice against the people that hurt the ones you love? It’s a highly emotional story with complex themes that befit the world of The Last of Us.
Uncharted 4 is the last major Naughty Dog title, and you could finish that game in 15 to 20 hours, depending on the way and level of difficulty you play the game of course. We can therefore assume that The Last of Us Part 2 has a storyline that lasts longer than 20 hours.

This morning in the Night Watch, Florian already showed the different editions of the game, but the prices were not yet known at the time. Those are listed in the blog post, so here they come. The prices of the two most expensive editions have been converted from USD to euros, so whether these are the exact European prices is not yet certain.
- Standard Edition: € 60, –
- Special Edition: € 80, –
- Collector’s Edition: € 153, –
- Ellie Edition: € 208, –
- Digital Deluxe Edition: € 70, –
Expectations are very high for this game, but with good reason. The Last of Us 2 will be released on February 21, 2020 for the PlayStation 4. Curious about what else Sony showed during the State of Play? Click here, here or here.
