this is the Huawei ecosystem in which they will invest 1,000 million dollars to resist without Google services.

Huawei seeks to overcome its dependence on Google. And to prove it, they are creating a powerful alternative: Huawei Mobile Services Core. During the celebration of the Web Summit 2019 congress, in Lisbon, the Chinese company has announced its strategy in software for the coming years. A series of projects and tools to avoid depending on North American companies like Google.

The US blockade has been especially noted in the Mate 30 Pro, its latest flagship that has arrived in Spain without access to Google Play. In its place we find the AppGallery application store and different Huawei applications. Are these enough to become an alternative to everything Google offers on Android? The truth is that not yet, but Huawei already has prepared almost 1,000 different APIs for developers in your ecosystem.

Here we explain how the new HMS Core work, what advantages Huawei offers compared to Google and how they intend to create a strong enough ecosystem for the company’s future mobiles.

How Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) Core work

A mobile is much more than its applications. A fairly simple example to understand is using Google Maps. The strength of the map service is not only the application, but the location services of other applications use Google data to know where you are. That is, Google not only offers a map, but a location service for other applications. And in the same way that we have this, there are also other services on mobile such as payments, identification, synchronization between games or information in the cloud.

Due to this, when the Huawei Mate 30 does not have access to Google Play, it also loses access to all associated Google services. And this is a problem, because not only do we stop being able to use Google apps, we also lose a large part of the features used by thousands of applications. To correct this, Huawei presents us with its own HMS Core, an alternative to Google Play Services.

What are the tools that Huawei currently offers? In particular we have 9 specialized dev kits since mid-August. Let’s see what they are and what they offer us:

  • Account Kit: Allows users to create a profile and register in different applications without having to add the number or password again.

  • Location Kit: Combine GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and nearby stations to get the location. Different APIs to access the location accurately, quickly and with low consumption. Options such as indoor location or geo-fencing will be added soon.

  • Map Kit: Global coverage in 150 countries, 150 million addresses and the ability to customize the displayed maps. An alternative to Google Maps for third parties that is not currently available as its own application.

  • Drive Kit: The name of the service evokes directly with its Google rival. It is the service for storage in the cloud, where the files are kept encrypted and can be accessed quickly from the mobile. At the moment we do not have file sharing, smart search, or collaboration between different users. But Huawei has ensured that these functions will be soon.

  • Game Service: The alternative to Play Games Services. Huawei allows developers to offer prizes in the form of gifts or create rankings and achievements. In the future it will also be possible to analyze game statistics or obtain data on specific events within the game.

  • Push Kit: Huawei’s services also come to be able to configure notifications. The Push Kit offers a system with a high level of reliability, compatibility between different devices and, like Google, it also allows you to send expanded notifications, with images and more information.

  • Analytics Kit: All developers need to know how their application is used. This is where the Analytics Kit is located, offering debugging tools, retention analysis, and a custom dashboard where you can find usage statistics.

  • In-app purchases Kit: Outside of China, Huawei offers in-app purchases through VISA / MasterCard / Paypal and other third-party services. In addition to these purchases, the company also offers the possibility of making subscriptions.

  • Ads Kit: The latest to come is the ad service, which will allow developers working in the AppGallery to grow financially and offer specific rewards for referrals.

During the event, Huawei explained that more than 50,000 applications are compatible with HMS Core and have 1.07 million registered developers. One of the aspects that Huawei has promoted of its services is the ease of creating a compatible application, only needing three days of development to adapt it.

In addition to the HMS Core, Huawei’s commitment to the software is based on the company’s applications such as AppGallery, AppTouch, Huawei Themes, Huawei Ability Gallery or QuickApp, its own counterpart to Google’s Instant Apps. As well as in Huawei HiAI, the intelligent assistant that will soon be extended by the company’s devices. It is an assistant with functions such as text recognition, image recognition, code recognition, facial recognition and video summary. An assistant that is already integrated in applications such as WPS, StorySign or PocketVision.

‘Shining Star’, a $ 1 billion program to attract developers

Huawei has 570 million active users. This was announced by Guo Ping, Huawei’s rotating president during his conference at this year’s Web Summit. The company has emphasized the development of applications and software to “exploit the full potential of the devices” and has positioned mobile devices and the cloud as one of the most relevant areas of work for Huawei in the coming years.

Among the new features announced are several programs to support these developers. On the one hand we have the Huawei Developer Program 2.0, with an investment of 1,500 million dollars to expand it and reach up to 5 million developers. On the other hand, there is the so-called “Shining-Star” Program. This is an investment of 1 billion dollars with the aim of “being able to attract a broader range of high-quality applications to the Huawei Mobile Services ecosystem.”

Currently, Huawei users can access these services through the Huawei AppGallery store, pre-installed on their latest mobiles. According to the latest company data, AppGallery has 390 million active users worldwide and 180,000 million downloads a year.

Huawei describes its commitment with the slogan “1 + 8 + N”, where the mobile phone is at the center of the ecosystem with eight other different devices such as tablets, smartwatches, the computer, the television or the car. Devices that in turn will allow access to the rest of the Internet of Things.

A total bet to get away from Google services

Jervis Su, vice president of Mobile Services of Huawei’s Consumer Business Unit, has reviewed what the company has prepared for its HMS Core, emphasizing its importance “not only in the Huawei ecosystem.” For this, the company has announced that 24 development kits for HMS Core will be available by the end of the year.

Among them we will find some such as Wallet Kit, to manage our purchases, DRM Kit, so that applications can protect their content or Health Kit, to synchronize health data. New APIs that already have their counterpart in Google but that will help Huawei so that users and developers do not lose functions with the change.

In addition to the news in the Huawei Mobile Services, the company has announced that DevEco Studio, its own development IDE, will be available in 2020. For the time being, developers can continue to use Java and Android Studio as usual in the Android programming environment. Because beyond the tools, developers also need financial incentives. It is because of that AppGallery offers 85% of the benefits to app creators, instead of the usual 70% on Google Play.

Huawei’s goal is to overcome the setback of having run out of Google services on its devices. We must bear in mind that in AppGallery, at the moment there are no applications of North American origin such as WhatsApp or Instagram. We do not know the status of the negotiations and development with these specific apps, but their arrival at AppGallery would mean that these developers would adapt their systems to Huawei. If we look at WhatsApp for example, this would mean betting on Drive Kit and not Google Drive for the backups.

It is unknown what will happen with the US blockade And it is that although in a few weeks it could be lifted, from Huawei they are already raising their future away from Google regardless of what happens. The company is looking for possible allies in Europe to boost the deployment of their HMS Core and send the message that they are prepared to rival Google in software as well. Time will tell if they manage to get the support of developers and users or if, if the veto is lifted, everything returns to the previous situation.
