Ubisoft changed the title of Gods & Monsters after facing legal opposition from Monster Energy

Immortals Fenyx Rising, Ubisoft’s flagship game during the past Ubisoft Forward, was initially announced as Gods & Monsters, and apparently the French company could have changed the title due to a legal dispute with the Monster Energy brand.

According to a report published by TechRaptor, Ubisoft faced legal opposition from Monster Energy Company in April 2020, by reason of the title of the developer, Gods & Monsters. This legal dispute could have marked Ubisoft’s decision to change the title of its game.

In June 2019, when Ubisoft registered the patent, it did not face any legal problems, and it was not until January 2020 that Monster Energy requested an opposition to the denomination. Gods & Monsters, stating that it could damage their own brand by causing a possible customer confusion between both products. In the patent registry the chronology of this process can be consulted.

To bolster its argument, the energy drink company exposes its connections with the video game industry, through the sponsorship of professional e-sports teams and players. Ubisoft’s response was delayed until May 2020, and in it deny all claims from Monster Energy’s opposition. However, prior to the Ubisoft Forward celebration in September, Ubisoft decided to officially change the title of the game, and it was renamed Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Ubisoft has been adamant about the reasons that ultimately led to the game’s title change, and in an interview with VGC, Julien Galloudec, Associate Director of Immortals Fenyx Rising, stated that the name change was not due to the conflict with Monster Energy, but to a change on the vision of the game.

“So no, the name change was entirely due to the vision of the game. When you start a game, it is always an adventure and it is a very iterative process. So you start with a vision that evolves as you build it with the team and we get feedback and ideas. […] So after that the game changed a lot, to the point where we felt we needed a new name to better align with that updated vision, so that’s where we decided to switch to Immortals Fenyx Rising. ”

Fenyx Immortals Rising It will arrive on December 3, and will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PC and Google Stadia.
