Warcraft 3 Reforged: absolutely EVERYTHING we know about the remaster.
The orc pawn’s speech is recorded in the unconscious of several who have already detonated their hands – and their brains – during a Warcraft 3 game.
The fact is that such a classic is not so easily overlooked, and at that point, Warcraft 3: Reforged was announced at BlizzCon 2018 to relive that experience. Whether through the campaign, regular matches or the various mods scattered there, fans can experience everything in updated graphics.
But the information about the remastering has diminished since the announcement was made and, taking into account that we had good months of waiting and some impactful updates for the original game – one that entered this Tuesday (28th)! – we decided to separate a collection with literally everything we know so far about Warcraft 3: Reforged.
Then choose the map, prepare the mouse and accompany us within this complete dossier.
An authentic remaster in the smallest details
In early May I had the opportunity to test the Warcraft 3: Reforged demo at an exclusive 25 year old Warcraft event held in Irvine, United States. Despite being the same BlizzCon 2018 demo, it was possible to experience the remastering experience closely and observe some details that may have escaped the public eye in recent months.
You can follow the video I recorded on the occasion below, accompanied by comments and details that I noticed during more than three tests of this demonstration.
But what longtime fans need to know is that the original experience is intact. For about two hours, I was able to see how the native controls and gameplay features were still there – even the deepest details of the engine. I naturally save groups of units and buildings in the keyboard numerals for easy access, and needless to say, nothing has changed in the process. The shortcut keys are still there, and I had no problem sitting down and doing exactly what I already knew humans could do.
Even though it was a “stuck” demo in the sense of not even being able to open the options menu, I could see that even the most “hidden” options of the gameplay are still there. I typed “/ fps” on one of the occasions, which is one of the commands implemented in the game in the updates of the last few months. And there it was: a small counter appeared near the top flap showing how many frames were being processed per second. Exactly as it is today in the original game. And the same happened with “/ apm” and “/ ping”.
This proves something that is not clear to many people: Reforged will not be a new game on your computer. It works like an upgrade that you can activate during gambling – a similar way to what is performed today with StarCraft: Remastered. In the older brother, remastering is nothing more than an option that you activate within the original game to bring the models in high quality in real time.
But don’t worry, there’s still a lot more at stake here.
In this visual aspect, the Warcraft 3: Reforged demo responded very well to the transition between the original game and the new version. The interface is clean and gives space to the rest of the game although some information is a little “smaller” than before. The hero’s attributes, for example, were left with the small font and the inventory was “lying flat” with smaller icons. Perhaps the difficulty of finding it quickly is temporary with eyes so accustomed to the old version, not to mention that all of this can be remodeled to the final version.
The animations are fluid and detailed. In this sense, I never thought how much a human soldier suffers until I watch his death animation in Reforged. They dive backwards on the ground, laying down the shield and finally embracing death. And I don’t even need to say when the spells are beautiful, especially the effect of the Paladin’s supreme ability, which revives everyone around him.
There are differences, however, that have drawn attention. The mission that the demo takes place, the sixth chapter of the human campaign in Reign of Chaos, brings a different scenario than that presented in the original game. Although the objective is the same – Arthas must kill his own people before Mal’Ganis turns them into undead – the position of the human base on the map and the city of Stratholme are different. There is a reason for this, something I will deal with better in the next topic.
The details we know so far
Blizzard revealed, during the BlizzCon 2018 panels, some interesting details that already show how Warcraft 3: Reforged will work. Most of this information went unnoticed because it is very specific to the public that has been playing for a long time; but here, it’s worth explaining how they’ll impact the game.
Before showing what is promised, it should be noted that the development team has already made several improvements within the game to “set the stage” for the arrival of the remaster. This even includes an update released this Tuesday (28th), the last scheduled until the arrival of Reforged. Improvements in the past few months include:
- More support for current monitors, including native windowed and borderless options;
- Merging Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne into one executable;
- Online mode with games created in the cloud, eliminating the old Custom Games created by users and hostbots;
- Remodeled and more balanced competitive maps;
- Balancing the game;
- Insertion of the LUA language for the map editor (the same used in World of Warcraft);
- Custom map size has increased, allowing for bigger and bolder mods;
- Room size has also increased to a maximum of 24 players.
The first detail of the panel, which was already presented above, is that the game will use the same engine and will make the remastered graphics and sound effects run “above” the original game. This will allow “cross-play” between versions: that is, players of the old edition will be able to play simultaneously against those who are in Reforged. Even the hitboxes will be the same, but with minor adjustments.
The campaign will undergo changes based on what has already been presented in World of Warcraft. As I mentioned earlier, the mission in which Arthas executes his people brings differences between the Reforged and the original version, and these modifications came to portray the city with more fidelity to what has already been shown in the MMORPG.
The online part also embraces the changes. Initially, automatic searches will be the most affected, as a new matchmaking system will be implemented together with a new “leveling”. Currently, players win matches and earn experience points and levels; but Blizzard’s intention is to bring ranking closer to what already exists in other games, with leagues and divisions.
In the map editor, players will be able to create their own models, including 4K assets. More than that: they will be able to customize the game interface, something only possible in more advanced instances of the editor.
And yes, the mods will be fully preserved and compatible between the two versions. This means that all maps already created can be played on Reforged, including DotA 1 and all of your favorite Tower Defense.
One of the most important things here is that, during the panel, the developers commented that new content will only be thought of or made after Reforged is released. The community is still asking Blizzard to implement new heroes or races and the most classic example of this is related to nagas, which are already present in the game files. But, apparently, fans should wait a little longer until they know if this is just a dream or can be implemented over time.
Summary and most common questions
A thousand and one doubts have appeared among fans since the announcement. I managed to follow most of them in posts by the community, live streams with fans and frequent discussions by the most diverse groups on the internet. Therefore, the clearest way to present more details of the game is to answer the most common questions.
When do you leave? 2019, without yet a specific period or date.
What will we have again? Redesigned campaign, new cinematics, graphics and soundtrack recreated in addition to more accessible gameplay.
Will Reforged be in Portuguese? Yes, the official game page has already confirmed that Warcraft 3: Reforged will be localized in our language.
Will it be a new game? No, Reforged will use the same engine and work as a graphic and sound upgrade from the traditional version – just like it was with StarCraft: Remastered.
Will there be cross-play between the original and Reforged? Yes, players of both versions will be able to play each other.
Will we have a server in South America? Blizzard has not given details yet. I already contacted the development team on the subject and they returned to me that, although they could not confirm anything, they will “fight for global servers” so that the players have the best connection possible.
What has the original game already received for the remastering? Balancing updates, compatibility adjustments for new machines, 4K support, more detailed interface and improvements to the map editor.
Will we have a new race or new heroes? They are frequent requests from the community, mainly regarding nagas, but none of this has been confirmed so far. The team only confirmed that new content may come after launch.
How will the mods for Reforged work? All mods from the original game will be compatible with Reforged and will have graphical improvements — except imported models, such as Narutos and Gokus da vida.
Will DotA 1 be back? In theory, he never left. The community continues to play the mod on Warcraft 3 and even adapts some changes from DotA 2 to the original version. These maps, as explained above, will be compatible and with the improved graphics of Reforged.
What do I get with pre-purchase? Players who buy in advance already gain access to the original game and its expansion, in the case of Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. You can find more information on how to redeem here.
Will it have a Beta phase? A testing phase was planned and it was announced on the BlizzCon 2018 panel for early 2019, but no information has been revealed since.
I have the original game, will I win Reforged? Do not.
I no longer find the original Warcraft 3 to buy, what happened? Currently, the game is only available in digital copy as a pre-purchase of Reforged.
Can the old Warcraft 3 be free like StarCraft? Perhaps, but none of this has been officially confirmed. If we consider StarCraft again, the old version is available for free on the Battle.net app and the remastering works as a “paid upgrade” for fans. The same could happen in the future for Warcraft 3.
