What do LG, Samsung, Siemens and Liebherr offer to ask you up to 8,000 euros for a fridge

I recently changed the fridge and the main factor in choosing a new model was the price (well, that and that it fell into the hole), I guess like most buyers. During the search I saw countless refrigerators, some very expensive. Or so I thought.

After walking through the stands of the main appliance brands at the IFA fair, the 1,000 euros that then seemed like a lot now seem like small change to me. To give two examples: LG has refrigerators of up to 8,000 euros and Liebherr is going to launch a line this year that they told us could reach 10,000 euros. But what does a refrigerator offer to cost so much?

Beyond the cold

The first thing to keep in mind is that super luxury refrigerators are still a container for storing food. That is, their main objective is to keep our food in good condition and for this they use the latest technologies to distribute the cold and maintain the optimum temperature. However, this is not enough to justify those prices and they often implement features that go beyond storage.

The mobile is the center of our digital universe but it is not the only ‘smart’ device. With the arrival of the IoT, almost any device in the house can be intelligent and refrigerators do not escape. I’m not talking about adjusting the temperature with an app, which too, but more advanced functions that suggest recipes, give tips for storing food or even cameras that ‘read’ the contents of our fridge and tell us when a food is going to expire.

Design is another important pillar of these devices, both at the level of materials and the arrangement of the different sections. There are refrigerators that look like a chest of drawers, others that have a kind of glass window to access the contents of the door and also those that have an integrated screen. Let’s see what each manufacturer offers

LG Signature with InstaView: a window to our fridge

A ‘knock, knock’ on the glass door of the LG Signature makes the light come on and we can see what’s inside before opening the fridgeThis way we save energy since cold is not lost. This is the objective of the InstaView system that integrates the LG Signature refrigerator, but it also allows us to open the small glass door to access the outer compartment for storing those things that we usually use.

In addition to this detail, if we go with our hands full, putting your foot on the bottom will open the door automatically. It can also be controlled with your voice through Google Assistant to, for example, ask you to cool the drink we just put in faster. All this costs 7,999 euros, although it can currently be purchased for 5,119.20 euros at El Corte Inglés.

There is not everything, there is a more advanced model that has the Same InstaView design but integrates a screen in the glass door. During the demo that we were able to see at IFA, they showed how you can ask us to read recipes, the weather, put videos or add items to the shopping list. In addition, if we have more appliances from the ThinQ range, it is possible to order the oven to preheat. The price is not confirmed at the moment, but we expect it to comfortably beat the model without a screen.

Liebherr Monolith: design and advanced cooling

At the Liebherr stand they also had their new line of top refrigerators, the Liebherr Monolith which will go on sale in the middle of next year. It is a built-in modular system that we can organize as best suits us, side-by-side fridge, fridge and freezer, two freezers … You choose.

Liebherr places special emphasis on its PowerCooling cooling technology that directs the cold throughout the interior, including the door, which is where it least usually reaches you. It also has Super Cool and SuperFrost, two fast cooling modes for both fridge and freezer and that we can control from the app Of the brand. By the way, it has a touch screen at the top with which to configure the device.

As for the interior design, it has special drawers for vegetables and meat, which Liebherr calls BioFresh-Plus, which allow independent control of both temperature and humidity. With regard to smart functions, although it is not the main focus of this range, the application gives us nutritional advice and allows us to recognize the contents of the fridge by taking a photo. There is nothing confirmed about the price but a Liebherr official told us that the Liebherr Monolith will come for a price between 7,000 and 10,000 euros. Almost nothing.

But it is not necessary to wait for the Monolith to leave us the savings in a refrigerator of the brand. Liebherr already has some models on the market that are not exactly cheap like the one Liebherr SBSes 8486 PremiumPlus with wine compartment for 5,311 euros or the Liebherr CBNes 6256 with drawer design for 6,249 euros.

Siemens IQ700: drawer design and smart functions

Siemens also has a wide range of refrigerators and at its IFA stand they had some of its most prominent models. The one in the photo above these lines is a Siemens IQ700 with a very peculiar design of drawers at the bottom, while the top maintains a classic two-door design.

Its design also highlights the glass that covers the entire exterior surface and the special interior drawers for salads. In addition, it has a screen on the edge of the door to set the temperature and can be controlled via the Home Connect app which in turn is compatible with Alexa. This model is not yet on the Siemens Spain website but there is a very similar one that costs 6,670 euros.

The other advanced model that we could see at the Siemens booth was one of the IQ500 series that features cameras inside so we can see the contents of the fridge from the app. The idea of this system is that if for example we are in the supermarket we can see if we need something without having to remember if there was milk or eggs.

In addition, the application has food recognition and offers tips for storage. If, for example, it detects that we have a pepper in one of the trays, it will suggest that we put it in the vegetable drawer. It also has recipe suggestions and can give us details about the nutritional value of foods. The model with a camera is considerably cheaper. Its official price is 1,895 euros but now it is lowered to 1,705.50 euros.

Samsung Family Hub: with screen in the door and Bixby

In the Samsung area, we could see its Family Hub refrigerator that was announced some time ago and continues to be one of the protagonists of its IoT offer. The Family Hub refrigerator features an American-style design and the refrigerator door features a large touch screen where we can leave notes to watch videos or consult recipes.

Like many other Samsung IoT products, this refrigerator has Tizen as an operating system and in it we can find many of the brand’s own applications, including the Bixby voice assistant. What’s more, connects with other products in the Samsung Family Hub range and for example we can make the screen reproduce the same as the television so as not to miss anything while we cook.

It also has three cameras inside to view the content and comes with a function that tells us when a food is going to expire and offers us recipes with it so that it does not spoil. With regard to design, the most prominent model is the four-door with a flexible compartment (Samsung calls it Flex Zone) that we can choose whether it will be a refrigerator or freezer.

At the moment, the Family Hub refrigerator is not available in Spain but it is in other countries such as the United States where the four-door model costs $ 4,799

Haier and Hisense: what’s to come

Our walk through IFA concluded at the booths of two well-known Chinese home appliance companies that had advanced refrigerators that are not yet for sale. The first stop was Haier, where we got to see the Link Cook refrigerator within the brand’s connected home ecosystem, which they call the Smart Home U +. Haier’s refrigerator has a side-by-side design that highlights its huge 21-inch touch screen, in the style of other models we have seen.

At the moment, the Haier Link Cook is focused on the Chinese market, where it has a series of special functions such as barcode scanning. When introducing food with this system, the refrigerator gives us product information such as provenance or nutritional value.

It also has interior cameras to see the food we have stored and even tells us when those carrots that we forgot in one of the drawers are going to expire. However, it does not recognize them automatically but must be entered manually. The Haier Link Cook also suggests recipes, voice control and offers access to other apps from your screen such as media player or weather. It has a camera on the panel so it can also be used to make video calls.

The last booth of our visit was Hisense’s. The company had on display its RS738 connected fridge with a four-door design and also a huge touch screen on the outside from where you can access different applications or view the contents of the refrigerator through the cameras that it integrates inside.

In this case cameras do recognize stored food And, in the same way as other models, it recommends menus with those ingredients and warns us if something is going to expire. As we said, it also has other applications such as access to Amazon to buy more food or anything else, multimedia apps or a timer.

A peculiarity of this refrigerator is that has a flexible compartment. The two upper doors are a fridge and, by default, the lower ones are a freezer, but if we want we can make the lower right door become a fridge. With regard to cooling technology, it has a system called Dual-Tech Cooling and Inverter technology.

At the moment, the RS738 Hisense refrigerator is not for sale and they did not confirm either price or availability. For its part, the Haier Link Cook is also not available globally. Haier officials confirmed to us that it is sold in China but the local website is not accessible so we do not have official price information. We will have to wait for more details.

The fridge of the future is still a fridge

These have been the most advanced proposals that the main appliance brands took to the last edition of the IFA fair. There are differences between them, but there are also many points in common.

As we said at the beginning, cooling and preserving food is the main objective of any refrigerator, and here all brands integrate their most complete cold technologies as well as the best materials. It is in the smart functions where advanced refrigerators distinguish themselves from the rest, but at the same time they are quite similar to each other.

The interior cameras, the food expiration notices, the touch screens on the outside … are recurring functions in many of the models that we have seen. Are they enough to justify their price? If what you are looking for is to watch TV in the fridge or ask him to turn on the oven with his voice, surely they are. The question that arises is whether we really need these advances in a refrigerator.
