Today we are going to explain what is and how does the Google voice search system work in Chrome. It is a function with which you can dictate to Google the terms or phrases you want to search for, and that after having been available for a while on the desktop version of the search engine’s website has also reached its mobile version through Chrome for Android.

Until now, to use this function on your mobile you had to use the Google widget for Android, and the results were always shown in the Google application. However, they can now be displayed in Chrome as well, and the results will be pretty much the same. With this, if you are using the browser on your mobile you no longer need to return to the main screen to use the widget.

What is Google Voice Search

Since its inception, the Google search engine has been based on text searches. You write a word or a phrase in the search engine, and it finds links that point to the same terms that you entered. Later they decided to add image searches, but this was already a completely different mechanic with which they analyzed photos that you upload and look for similar ones.

Voice searches work the same as normal text searches of Google. The only difference is that you don’t have to type on the keyboard. Instead, you tap on the microphone button and say the term or phrase you want to search for.

When you do it, Google will analyze what you have dictated, and it will transcribe your words to text to perform a normal textual search. Therefore, all you are doing is dictating to Google the words you want to search for in its search engine instead of having to type them yourself.

However, voice searches are a function that Google almost always tries to reserve for Chrome as an incentive to convince you and make you use your browser. This means that when you enter Google.com in Chrome you will immediately see the option, but if you enter with another browser it will almost certainly not appear.

On Android you can also use it without having Chrome through the Google widget, but in this case the search results will be shown to you in the Google app and not in your default browser, and when you click on the links you will use your internal browser.

Use Google voice searches on your PC

To use Google voice searches on your computer, you have to install the Google Chrome browser and go to Google.com. When you are on the main page of the search engine, click on the microphone icon that appears on the right side of the search box.

If this is the first time you use this function, Google will ask you for permission to use your computer’s microphone. It will do this through a Chrome pop-up window, in which you have to click on the Allow button to allow access to your microphone, and therefore can hear what you say.

Next, you will go to a screen in which a fairly large red button appears with a microphone icon. It means that Google is listening to you, so now you have to dictate the search term you want to use. When you do, you will see what you have said is transcribed on the screen.

And that’s it. Without you having to do anything else, when you finish transcribing what you say Google will automatically search for what you have dictated. Then, you will go to a screen where you will see the same results that you would have if you had simply typed the same word or phrase in the search.

Next, you will go to a screen in which the text Speak now appears, and you will see that at the top of the notification bar an icon of a microphone appears indicating that the mobile phone is in use. It means that Google is listening to you, so now you have to dictate the search term you want to use.
