Windows 10 May 2020 Update, or what is the same, Windows 10 2004has been released for a couple of months now, and yet it remains stuck on many devices due to its long list of initial problems, many of which still have no solution.

The most recent to join the list is a bug related to the internet connection. Multiple user reports indicate that the network connectivity indicator is reporting that they do not have an Internet connection, even though they can use the browser to access the web.

The problem here, in addition to being a nuisance, is that although the message does not really reflect that you do not have access to the Internet, the connections of the system components to Microsoft services believe that there is really no connection and applications such as Office 365, show a similar message and cannot be used.

Therefore, although the user can connect to the Internet and open pages from the browser, it may be that other applications like Steam, Spotify, Office, etc. They cannot connect and are basically unusable.

Microsoft is aware of this problem and although a patch is expected in the next cumulative update of Windows 10 2004, at the moment it remains unsolved.

If this bug affects you, you can try this solution

The fault is in the system’s network connectivity status indicator, a Windows 10 component that periodically connects to the URL http://www.msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt to determine if there is an Internet connection. Depending on the result, the indicator will display a message that says “Internet access” or one that says “Not connected.”

To fix this bug temporarily it is possible edit windows registry for the indicator to detect the Internet connection correctly. What you have to do if you are affected by this failure is:

  • Open the Windows Registry: press Windows Key + R, type “regedit” (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • Navigate to HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services NlaSvc Parameters Internet
  • Right click on “EnableActiveProbing” and then on “Modify”
  • Change the Value data from “0” to “1”
  • Restart your computer
